CNY Solidarity Action Alerts (Week of Feb 27)

Monday (Feb. 27): Multiple options today, including social media, in-person, and phone-calling actions (one of which starts in just a few minutes!)

  1. This morning at 10am, U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY 24th) will join The Auburn Citizen’s Robert Harding for a Facebook Live interview. The interview will be streamed on The Citizen’s Facebook page,facebook.com/auburncitizen. If you’re reading this before 10am, the Citizen invites readers to submit questions for the congressman prior to the live interview. To submit a question, send an email torobert.harding@lee.net.
  1. CNY Solidarity’s state legislative action team has arranged a meeting with State Senator Dave Valesky on Mon. 2/27 at the Center for Peace & Social Justice, 2013 E. Genesee St.  We will meet in advance about the agenda at 1 PM.  The meeting with Valesky will start at 1:30 PM.  RSVP and for more information: Jonah Minkoff-Zern jzern@citizen.orgor Paul Weichselbaum canela8800@gmail.com.
  1. Jose Coyote Perez, a member of the Workers Center of Central New York (one of CNY Solidarity’s founding member organizations) has been detained by ICE. We are getting more details, but please call the ICE Buffalo Field Office at (716) 843-7600. More details here, including a petition urging Mr. Perez’s release.
  1. Call Rep. Katko and urge him to co-sponsor Rep. Nadler’s resolution of inquiry to require investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia (H.Res. 111). Tomorrow morning, the House Judiciary Committee will vote on this resolution, which would require Attorney General Jeff Sessions to release documents related to corruption by Trump or his cronies, including ties to foreign governments. This is not a partisan issue; it’s about the integrity of the Oval Office and of our democracy. Yet, only 67 MoCs have co-sponsored. More details here. Katko’s numbers are 315-423-5657 (Syracuse), 315-253-4068 (Auburn), or 202-225-3701 (DC).
  1. At 4:30pm, the Syracuse City School District Board of Education will hold a Public Budget Hearing at 725 Harrison Street in Syracuse. 1. CNY Solidarity’s door-knocking committee will meet at 7:30pm at the Center for Peace and Social Justice, 2013 East Genesee Street. The committee is planning our first door-to-door canvassing effort, scheduled for March 4.

Tuesday (Feb. 28): multiple actions today, in-person and phone-calling

  1. Syracuse Mayor Miner has been hosting “Resist Trump Tuesday” rallies on Tuesdays from 12-1pm in Perseverance Park in downtown Syracuse. This week’s event will focus on immigration and feature speakers from the Workers Center of CNY, which is one of CNY Solidarity’s founding member organizations.
  1. The Senate is scheduled to vote today on the nomination of former Texas Gov. Rick Perry to be Secretary of Energy. Perry called for abolition of the department—then famously forgot which department it was—when he ran for President in 2012. Please call the offices of Senators Schumer (202-224-6542, 315-423-5471) and Gillibrand (202-224-4451, 315-448-0470), urge them to oppose Perry’s nomination, and thank them if they pledge to do so.
  1. Call Rep. Katko and ask if he will support a congressional request for the Treasury Department to turn over Trump’s tax returns. The numbers are 315-423-5657 (Syracuse), 315-253-4068 (Auburn), or 202-225-3701(DC). If his staff refuse to give a direct answer (or if you reach the office’s voicemail), please urge Rep. Katko to support this request, leave your name and number, and ask for a callback with his position. Trump is the only president in our modern history not to release his tax returns, and Congress has power to obtain them. More details here.
  1. Support local activists charged with resisting the lethal and illegal use of MQ9 Reaper drones over Afghanistan and elsewhere. Five members of the Upstate Drone Action coalition face charges of obstructing governmental administration (max sentence of 1-year), trespass, and disorderly conduct. They will face a jury at 5pm on Tuesday, 2/28. The five were arrested for participating in a nonviolent protest at Hancock Air Base on 3/19/15, the 12th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The trial takes place in Dewitt Town Court, at 5400 Butternut Drive, East Syracuse. Supporters are welcome. Please contact Ed Kinane at 315-478-4571 with any questions.

If you can’t make it in person, please call 1-866-985-2543to thank Senators Schumer and Gillibrand for co-sponsoring Senator Elizabeth Warren’sPresidential Conflicts of Interest Act of 2017 (S. 65) and ask Senator Schumer to help us get the remaining 22 members of his Caucus to sponsor. Katko (315-423-5657, 315-253-4068, or 202-225-3701) and urge them to co-sponsor theRestricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act. The bill number is S200 in the Senate and HR669 in the House. This legislation would prohibit the President from launching a nuclear first strike without a declaration of war by Congress.
