Action Alerts – Week of July 24th

CNY Solidarity members and supporters:

Monday (July 24): One call to Rep. Katko today, plus signing up for a 2nd call later in the week

Obstruction of justice is unacceptable!

We’ll be calling Rep. Katko a lot this week, as the House tries to rush through a lot of business before leaving Saturday for a  month-long recess. For Wednesday’s phone call, focused on Katko’s stance if Trump tries to fire special counsel Robert Mueller, we’re going to try something new. Please click here to sign up for a specific time on Wednesday when you’ll place a call to Katko’s Syracuse office. By spacing the calls evenly throughout the work day, we’re hopeful that we’ll increase their impact.

Defend consumer rights!

In the meantime, we’ve got a call for everyone to place TODAY too. Please call Rep. Katko and urge him to leave the “Arbitration rule” in place and let the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau protect your rights without interference. More details here. The House is scheduled to vote on this bill TOMORROW. As always, Katko’s numbers are 315-423-5657 (Syracuse), 315-253-4068 (Auburn), or 202-225-3701 (DC).

Tuesday (July 25): Stay tuned for further health care news, as the Senate may yet vote today on a motion to proceed on some version of TrumpCare. If so (and if the motion carries), there would be a floor vote on the merits sometime later in the week. In the meantime, one phone call to Rep. Katko today, plus a chance to come out and support Planned Parenthood tonight.

Defund Hate: No Ban, No Wall!

Please call Rep. Katko today and urge him to oppose any budget that finances Trump’s mass deportation agenda. The House may vote as early as today on a spending bill that includes $1.6 billion for Trump’s border wall. More details here. As always, Katko’s numbers are 315-423-5657 (Syracuse), 315-253-4068 (Auburn), or 202-225-3701 (DC).

Take Action Night with Planned Parenthood

Featuring guest speaker Dana Balter! 5:30-7pm, 1120 E. Genesee St. in Syracuse. This is an activist and advocacy night–part educational, part activity, and part social. Please RSVP to advocacy@ppcwny.org to join us.

Wednesday (July 26): One call relay today, plus CNY Solidarity Coalition meeting tonight

Obstruction of justice is unacceptable!

Today, please call Rep. Katko’s Syracuse office (315-423-5657) and urge him to issue a public statement than any efforts by President Trump to fire special counsel Robert Mueller or to issue pardons to any targets of Mueller’s investigation would lead Katko to support impeachment hearings. Before you call, please click here to sign up for a specific time at which you’ll do so. After you call, please return to that same link and type a brief note regarding whom you spoke with and what he/she said.

CNY Solidarity Coalition meeting

8:15-9:30pm, Bishop Harrison Center, 1342 Lancaster Ave, Syracuse, NY 13210. Please note the late start time. Many of us will be attending a memorial service for longtime local activist Kathy Barry at 6:30pm tonight, so the Coordinating Committee decided to push back the start time of our meeting. We’ll gather as a full coalition at 8:15 for some brief announcements, followed by breakout groups. Groups that will meet include at least the following: Climate Justice, Criminal Justice, Federal Leg, State Leg, Rapid Response, Story Based Organizing, Town Hall, and Voter Registration.

Thursday (July 27): One phone call to Sen. Gillibrand today, plus a federal legislative research training tonight

Today, please call Sen. Gillibrand’s office and urge her to sign on as co-sponsor of the bipartisan DREAM Act (S. 1615), which would be a permanent legislative fix to the terrifying problem that many young immigrants face: their legal status under Pres. Obama’s DACA program could be ripped away by Trump at any moment. More details here. The bill was introduced in the Senate last week, with Sen. Schumer as a co-sponsor. Let’s urge Sen. Gillibrand to add her name too. Sen. Gillibrand is at 202-224-4451 or 315-448-0470.

6pm: Federal legislative research training, Manlius Library. All are welcome, but please rsvp to Jennifer M. Staples <tigg@twcny.rr.com> if you plan to attend.

Friday (July 28)

One more call to Katko today, before a month-long congressional recess starts tomorrow. Last week, congressional Democrats introduced a no confidence resolution (H.Res 456), objecting to the conduct of the president. It currently has 28 co-sponsors, all Democrats. The resolution cites 80+ instances of corruption, abuse of power, and contempt for democratic norms and institutions on the part of the president and calls for several specific changes in administration behavior and policy. The full text is well worth a read. Today, please call Rep. Katko’s DC office (202-225-3701) and ask his stuff for his views on this resolution. If they tell you they don’t know, indicate your support for the resolution and ask for a callback with information regarding Katko’s position.

Saturday (July 29)

Today is the first day of a month-long congressional recess for the House. (In the Senate, Majority Leader McConnell has pushed back the start of their recess by a couple weeks, in his continued effort to pass TrumpCare.) A number of progressive groups have joined to call for another national day of action focused on health care. As of now, we’re not aware of any local events in CNY, but if the Senate does indeed pass some version of TrumpCare this week, we may need to pull something together at the last minute.

Sunday (July 30)
