Action Alerts – Week of Sept 11th

Please find below the weekly ACTION ALERTS from our legislative action team.

Monday (Sept. 11):

Oppose H.R. 3697, The Criminal Alien Gang Removal Act. Call John Katko and ask him to vote against this bill when it comes up for a vote in the House on Tuesday. Katko’s numbers are 315-423-5657 (Syracuse), 315-253-4068 (Auburn), and 202-225-3701 (DC).

Don’t be fooled by the name. It criminalizes immigrants, including those fleeing gang violence, and allows more of them to be detained and deported. It also affects vulnerable populations such as asylum seekers, TPS holders, and unaccompanied children. The bill can be found here

Community Forum on Service Sharing. The County Executive’s office is facilitating a community forum on sharing services between Ondondoga County and the towns and municipalities within it at 12:00 p.m. at the OnCenter.

Facilitation Skills Workshop, 6:30 – 8 pm, Bishop Harrison Center, 1342 Lancaster Ave., Syracuse

Tuesday  (Sept. 12):

Make New York a Sanctuary State. Call Gov. Cuomo  518-474-8390 and urge him to either sign an Executive Order making NYS a sanctuary state

or to call a special legislative session to get the Liberty Act passed in the New York Senate (it already passed in New York Assembly in regular session). We must make sure that local law enforcement does not help federal Immigration and Customers Enforcement target, detain, and deport undocumented immigrants.

Vote in the Primary Elections. Names of candidates and offices is availablehere Our survey of the Syracuse Mayoral candidates’ positions appears here:https://www.cnysolidarity.org/mayor/

Wednesday  (Sept. 13):

Defend DACA recipients. Tell Senators Charles Schumer  (202-224-6542; 315-423-5471), and Kirsten Gillibrand (202-224-4451; 315-448-0470)  that you want the Dream Act attached to every must-pass bill in Congress. This would restore the practice of not deporting law abiding immigrants who came here as children, which Trump plans to end absent Congressional action.  A script and state specific facts can be found here .

Thursday  (Sept. 14):

Signup to Meet Potential Challenger to Governor Cuomo

Oppose the House Budget Resolution. Call John Katko  and ask him to oppose the house budget resolution, which is due for a vote in two weeks. It contains drastic cuts in Medicare, Medicaid, and education. Details and a script can be found here
