Action Alerts – Week of Oct 16th

CNY Solidarity members and supporters:
Please find below the weekly ACTION ALERTS from our legislative action team. The House is on recess again this week, and we’ve got actions planned at all four of Rep. Katko’s district offices on Wednesday (focused on the GOP tax agenda), plus another action at the Syracuse office on Thursday (focused on the Dream Act). More details below.

The latest iteration of Trump’s Muslim Ban goes into effect on Wednesday (10/18). There’s a national protest planned in D.C. that day, and our friends at the Workers Center of CNY are mobilizing to get people there. A bus will be leaving Syracuse on 10/17 at 5:00pm, returning late on 10/18. You can reserve your ticket here FREE if you use the promotional code: wccny.  If you have any problems registering, email nslade@workerscentercny.org. Let’s fight for all immigrants and refugees!

And now, on to the action alerts.

Monday (Oct 16)

Congress must fund CHIP!

Nine million children rely on the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), a federal-state partnership where the federal government provides most — or in some cases, all — of the funding necessary to cover uninsured children. No one thought Congress would let CHIP funding expire on September 30, but the Republicans were so busy trying to repeal Obamacare that that’s exactly what happened. Today, please call Rep. Katko and urge him to support full and immediate funding. Katko’s numbers are 315-423-5657 (Syracuse), 315-253-4068 (Auburn), or 202-225-3701 (DC). More details here.

Tuesday (Oct 17)

One phone call today, plus candidate forums in Syracuse and Oswego tonight

Say no to attacks on disability rights

We really shouldn’t even have to say this (that’s how outrageous this bill is), but we need you to call Rep. Katko and urge him to vote no on H.R. 620: ADA Education and Reform Act. As noted by Human Rights watch, this bill “would very deliberately undermine the protections afforded under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA)” and would “dramatically increase the burden on any person with a disability who seeks to vindicate their rights.” Right now, under the ADA, businesses open to the public are required to make themselves accessible to people with disabilities. If they don’t, a person with disabilities can take them to court or file a complaint with U.S. Department of Justice. That all changes under this horrible bill. Katko’s numbers are 315-423-5657 (Syracuse), 315-253-4068 (Auburn), or 202-225-3701 (DC).

New York Can Take Action Against Trump Sabotage of the ACA

The Trump administration’s action last week to stop Cost Sharing Reduction (CSR) payments is another attempt to sabotage the Affordable Care Act. New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman is considering taking Trump to court to resume the CSR payments. Today, please call A.G. Schneiderman at 800-428-9071 to urge him to take this issue to Federal court. If you’ve got time for a second call, please call Gov. Andrew Cuomo (518-474-8390) to advocate that he inform New Yorkers about what  the state will do to preserve the ACA here, in the face of the Trump administration’s assaults—including when Gov. Cuomo will support a Medicare-For-All system in our state.

Demand #DreamActNow!

1pm at Rep. Katko’s Syracuse office, 440 S Warren St, Syracuse 13202-2634. Join us to rally for the Dream Act. More details here.

Friday (Oct 20)

One phone call today, plus a meeting with Schumer staff at 2pm.

Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement

The Defense Department’s 1033 program transfers surplus military equipment to police. It has given billions of dollars’ worth of tanks, grenade launchers and other weapons to local law enforcement agencies – including more than 93,000 machine guns. In 2014, police in combat gear driving mine-resistant tanks violently confronted people protesting the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The national outrage and organizing that followed helped force President Obama to dramatically scale back the 1033 program. But now Trump wants to bring it back in full force. Today, please call Rep. Katko and urge him to cosponsor H.R. 1556: Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act, which would prohibit this escalation and help keep weapons of war out of our communities. The bill has two Republican co-sponsors, but Katko isn’t one of them. More details here. Katko’s numbers are 315-423-5657 (Syracuse), 315-253-4068 (Auburn), or 202-225-3701 (DC).
