CNY Solidarity Coalition

United in defense of our community and our neighbors

Action Alerts – Week of Jan 29

CNY Solidarity members and supporter:
Please find below the weekly ACTION ALERTS from Indivisible NY24 and our legislative action teams. Highlight of the week is the March for Justicetoday at noon—in Syracuse.

First, a couple requests from our federal legislative action team:

  • We’re looking for someone with the technical know-how to project digital images onto the exterior wall of a public building (like these ones). If you’re willing to help on this front, please reply to me.
  • If you don’t have one of these great #ShameOnKatko lawn signs yet, reply to me with an address and we’ll do our best to deliver one to you. In exchange, we’ll ask for a $5 donation to CNY Solidarity, or more if you’re able.

Today (Jan 29)

We’re marching for immigration justice at noon and organizing for universal healthcare at 5:30pm.

March for Justice: Immigrants and Refugees are Welcome Here

12-1pm at Syracuse City Hall, 233 E. Washington St. More details here.

As DACA recipients remain in jeopardy, TPS for Salvadorans, Haitians and others is gone, undocumented workers face deportation, and direct attacks continue on the refugee admissions program, we invite our community to march in solidarity with our immigrant and refugee neighbors. We will gather at Syracuse City Hall, march past the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Department to the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Office at 401 S. Salina St. where we will stop for speakers and continue our message of calling on all Central New Yorkers of good will to help protect those threatened by these policies and demand that our elected representatives resist these racist policies. We will continue the march to the Hanley Federal Building for concluding speakers.

Campaign for New York Health Syracuse Organizing Meeting

5:30-7pm, Bishop Harrison Center, 1342 Lancaster Ave. in Syracuse

RSVP to let the organizers know you will attend!

The Campaign for New York health is committed to building a movement to win universal health care, in New York and nationally. As part of the campaign, we’re documenting how New Yorkers experience the healthcare system. Sharing our stories is critical to building a movement for a humane healthcare system that puts human need before insurance company profits. Please share your story and encourage friends and family to share as well: www.nyhcampaign.org/tell_your_story

Tuesday (Jan 30)

Join the new Poor People’s Campaign

When Dr. King was killed, he was working to build a nationwide Poor People’s Campaign. Today, the Rev. William Barber and others are reviving this legacy, and the campaign is coming to Syracuse. 5:30pm at University United Methodist Church, 1085 E. Genesee St. A number of CNY Solidarity members are active w/ this effort, and more would be welcome.

Wednesday (Jan 31)

Community grid now!

Re: advocating for the community grid, it has been reported that an environmental impact statement about the tunnel boondoggle option has already been done. Please call your Assembly Member and State Senator to tell them: A decision about I-81 must be made now. If an environmental impact assessment has been done about the tunnel, release it now. If one hasn’t been done and our communities will have to wait an extra year for a decision, drop the tunnel option now. Most of us are represented in the Assembly by Pamela Hunter (315-449-9536), Al Stirpe (315-452-1115) [a supporter of the community grid], Bill Magnarelli (315-428-9651), or Gary Finch (315-255-3045); if you’re not sure whose district you’re in, click here or here and enter your address to find out. Likewise, most of us are represented in the State Senate by David Valesky (315-478-8745), John DeFrancisco (315-428-7632), or James Seward (607-432-5524), but those links will help you find out if you’re not sure.

Thursday (Feb 1)

Call on Cuomo to support renewable energy today

From our state legislative action team: The approval of the CPV power plant in Orange County has been tainted by testimony in the corruption trial of Governor Cuomo’s former aide Joseph Percoco. Call Governor Cuomo at 877-235-6537 and urge him to stop the CPV natural gas power plant.  Tell him: “As a constituent, I urge Governor Cuomo to block the CPV power plant. Instead of approving another natural-gas plant, he should lead a transition to 100 percent renewable energy.” If he wants to show that he is a true leader, Governor Cuomo must lead New York in a transition to 100 percent renewable energy. There is no good reason to allow new fossil fuel plants, much less one possibly built on bribes, when cleaner alternatives are available.

Friday and Saturday (Feb 2-3)

No actions today (until further notice!). Enjoy the time with friends and family, and rest up for the long year ahead of us.

Sunday (Feb 4)

Make America Magnifique Again

Onondaga St. in Syracuse. More details here and here. Please forward to friends who might be interested.

Learn how climate change is affecting Central New York and how you can become part of the world wide  movement to address climate change. The festive  event will feature French food, music, and refreshments. Representatives from organizations and businesses  working on climate change will be available to talk. A free will donation is requested. Funds will be sent to support a bilateral research project on Climate Change.
