Community Impact of ACEs and Trauma

Understand how ACEs and unaddressed trauma show up in our daily interactions with each other. Be part of the positive transformation of the Syracuse schools and communities.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) cause trauma that affects health and education. Trauma shows up as behavior in and out of the classroom. By using ACEs to identify sources of trauma we build resilient students and families leading to academic success.
Resilient CNY is a collaboration between Sanchia A Callender Inc, Art Music People, and NeuroDiversity Consulting, raising awareness of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the impact of trauma across Central New York communities. We work to bring a trauma sensitive approach to all areas of our communities building a stronger more vibrant Central New York.

From early voting to small-donor matching funds, from campaign finance restrictions to automatic voter registration, now is the time to win significant election reforms in New York. Join us on January 9 in Albany as the NYS legislature is sworn in and holds events throughout the day.
Come hold signs and participate in swearing-in events and celebrations so we can lobby and engage legislators in support of election reforms. Let’s make sure our voices ring loud and make 2019 the year we fix New York’s broken democracy.
Dare to Dream, Creative Workshops with the Syr. Community Choir

Come join us for an evening of connection, singing, reflection about the concert, and some fun, creative workshops!
As the new year begins and the days start to get longer, we want to take this opportunity to connect with one another about our personal and collective dreams for the coming year, and get our creative juices
flowing.
Schedule:
6:45- 7: check in, sign up for workshops, say hello to each other
7- 7:30: meditation, sing
7:15- 7:30: concert reflections, community announcements
7:30- 7:50: ‘Dare to Dream’ creative writing to explore our hopes and intentions for 2019
7:55- 8:30: join workshop groups
8:35- 9: as a full group to share what you created, appreciations
Workshops:
1) Vocal Improv with Colleen Kattau (SCC Creative Director): Practice being bold, singing together in new and creative ways.
2) Drama with Karin Franklin (Paul Robeson Performing Arts Company): Using dramatic reading and movement, and our dreams for the year as inspiration, we will learn how to use our voices and bodies to lend power to our intentions.
3) Songwriting and Harmony Kath Fathers and Marcia Hagan (SCC Creative Directors): Using our creative writing about our dreams for the year, we will explore adding melody and harmony to create our own new songs.

Racism/Oppression is Trauma. Period. It leaves in its wake fractured bodies, minds, lives and communities. No one escapes, perpetrator or victim. Generation to generation.
Many of us are daily, walking-wounded and the truth of the link between original and modern-day slavery and the prevalence of mental health issues in communities of color still go unacknowledged.
This workshop is an experience, a forum for both people of color and allies to gather in safe and sacred space to breathe and to begin the “truth-telling” that may set us free. We will take a meditative journey, listen in reverence to each other, conjure and sit with the wisdom of our deeper selves. We will also learn a new coping skill, explore inner pathways to our own liberation and, hopefully, leave not only feeling more renewed but with a better sense of how to enlist soul-based outcomes to assist in the healing of self and community.

Syracuse Lead Prevention Coalition monthly meeting

Syracuse has one of the nation’s highest rates of lead exposure for children. Our monthly meetings have brought together concerned citizens, non-profit workers, elected officials, and other community organizers.
This month we will be developing an action plan, and discussing the path forward with coalition building. We will be joined by Legal Services CNY, and hear about their efforts canvassing and community
outreach. Please come join us and build the political to create long term, sustainable change.
