Community Calendar – Nov 12 – 19

Thank you to Elaine Denton, Mary Kuhn, and Misse Ross for sharing their experiences about running for office at this past Sunday’s coalition meeting. Thank you for your advocacy and leadership!

Thank you to Michaela Czerkies and Ursula Rozum of the Syracuse Peace Council and Justice for Palestine committee for an informative presentation Sunday on the brutality facing Palestinian children under military occupation, and its relevance to rights of children everywhere as we stand in solidarity against the immoral detention of children at our Southern border. Thanks to the presentation, we are better equipped to speak to our congressional representatives about the need to support and cosponsor HR 2407, the Promoting Human Rights for Palestinian Children Living under Israeli Military Occupation Act. Please get in touch if your faith group or other organization would like to host a similar presentation.

Also, if you have not yet signed the petition to release Justino, shared to us by organizers of the Syracuse Immigrant and Refugee Defense Network, you may read more and sign here.

American Dreams: Immigration Stories

Tuesday Nov 12th 7 PM- 9PM · ArtRage Gallery 505 Hawley Ave

ArtRage Gallery will present a staged reading of American Dreams: Immigration Stories, a collection of stories told from the perspective of immigrants living in the United States, as a fundraiser for both ArtRage and the Friends of Farmworkers House.

$10 Suggested Donation at the door.
The play, written by award-winning director and playwright Linda Britt and directed here by Carmen Viviano-Crafts, will feature local actors and activists; Aly Wane, Karin Franklin-King, Gerard Moses, Mary Slechta, Daryl Acevedo, Lilli Komurek, and introducing Kailana Rowser.

Britt wrote the play in response to public attitudes surrounding immigration, and took inspiration from current events, such as the travel ban and the expiration of DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy. Britt says, “This play was sparked by the news we see every day, and the rhetoric that’s coming out about there being ‘bad’ immigrants.”

Pack the Council! Stop the Weakening of the CRB! Hosted by Black Lives Matter Syracuse

Wed, Nov 13th 12:45 PM – 1:45 PM · Common Council Chambers 3rd Floor 233 E Washington St

Special meeting of the Syracuse Common Council Public Safety Committee to consider an amendment to weaken the Citizen Review Board! Call to action!!

A proposed amendment by outgoing councilor Steve Thompson will weaken the CRB considerably by continually describing its actions as “advisory” and essentially optional. Citizens are asked to come and oppose the amendment. It is essential to show the Common Council that we will not tolerate weakening this crucially important body. There will be time for the public to speak. Join us in solidarity with Black Lives Matter Syracuse.

The Citizens Review Board (CRB) has been reviewing citizen complaints about misconduct by Syracuse police officers since 1993.  It has never had the power to impose disciplinary actions on police officers but makes recommendations to the Chief based on CRB determinations about particular cases. It also recommends improvements to Syracuse Police Department policies, training, and supervision practices. For example, the recently adopted Use of Force policy was put in place after years of recommendations by the CRB to do so.

 In addition:

·        The CRB’s power is already strictly limited by the existing ordinance. The Chief makes all decisions about discipline.

·        The CRB has made some progress over the last several years in defining its powers. Due to a State court ruling, it now has the power to subpoena documents, and to subpoena police officers to appear at CRB hearings (although they can refuse to speak).

·        Councilor Thompson and the City Corporation Counsel have attempted to blame the CRB for a “drain on City resources” due to multiple million-dollar judgements by courts against the city for the actions of police officers. The CRB is not responsible for these judgements.

·        New York City and Rochester have just approved enhancements to the powers of their citizen oversight bureaus.

Join us to witness what the Commissioners say in the 19th Floor Boardroom. Will the PSC finally issue the long-awaited energy efficiency order? Will the PSC acknowledge that the uncertainty of not having a plan thwarts our efforts to promote energy efficiency and renewable heat and emboldens fossil fuel infrastructure buildout? On November 14 we will again gather in Agency Building 3 in 19th Floor Boardroom at 9:30am for the 10:30 meeting. Then we will hold a 1:30pm press conference in Legislative Office Building Room 130 – our reaction to what was (or wasn’t) discussed in the Public Service Commission meeting.

Secure Our Vote: Syracuse

Thu, Nov 14th 10:30 AM – 11AM · James M. Hanley Federal Building 100 South Clinton St, Syracuse

Time is running out to secure the vote, and the clock is ticking on the next Congressional funding deadline.

Last month, democracy advocates organized dozens of events, and made thousands of phone calls,
calling on McConnell and the Senate to fund election security.

As a result, McConnell announced his support for $250M for election security. It’s a small sum compared to the $600M passed by the House with strong accountability language requiring
that taxpayer funds actually be used to secure the vote.

The Senate and House must agree on how to fund the government by Nov. 21st – will they give the states meaningful funding with accountability to secure the vote before 2020, or is
all of this just talk?

We need to ensure that election security funding makes it into the pre-Thanksgiving funding deal, to ensure the funds are received in time to secure our elections.

Join us on Nov, 14 to call on Congress for the $600M and accountability language so states can Secure Our Vote!

Sat, Nov 16th 10 AM – 4PM · Community Folk Art Center 805 E Genesee St, Syracuse

Day-long workshop to build community, engage with local history and stories, and begin to engage with those stories through InterPlay forms and practices.

The Sankofa Communities Syracuse Project invites you to join us in shaping and co-creating a Sankofa Communities Syracuse Project that will address issues of historical community displacements, but also intersecting questions of sovereignty, self-determination, survival, and thriving. The goal of this project is to create community engagement leading to a performance. We envision monthly gatherings and two day-long workshops leading up to a free, interactive community performance. Some of the materials we may use are factual timelines that highlight federal treaties; federal, state and county laws that were enacted specifically to support the displacement of Native American, Black, and Latinx communities and families, as well as white flight and economic disinvestment; and some actual stories of those families.

Imprisoning a Generation – Film Screening

Monday Nov 18th 7 PM – 8:30 PM · May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society

Imprisoning a Generation is a documentary film following the stories of four young Palestinians who have been detained and imprisoned under the Israeli military and political systems. Their perspectives, along with the voices of their families, combine to form a lens into the entangled structures of oppression that expand well beyond the prison walls.

Watch the trailer at www.anemoia.net

This event is organized byn the Justice for Palestine committee of the Syracuse Peace Council and May
Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society.

Justice for Palestine’s No Way to Treat a Child campaign aims to build support for Palestinian children’s rights by encouraging Congressional representatives to cosponsor H.R. 2407, the Promoting Human Rights for Palestinian Children Living under Israeli Military Occupation Act.
H.R. 2407 seeks to promote justice, equality and human rights for children globally by prohibiting U.S. foreign military aid given to any country from supporting “the military detention, interrogation, abuse, or ill-treatment of children in violation of international humanitarian law.”

If your organization would like to sign on to our letter in support of HR 2407 and/or host a presentation for your group on Israeli military detention of Palestinian children, contact michaela@peacecounci.net.
