Syracuse Lead Ordinance
1 pm: Syracuse Common Council chambers.
Demonstrate solidarity with families affected by lead poisoning. Support the City of Syracuse Lead Abatement Ordinance (here), which aims to improve identification and mitigation of lead hazards, and to protect families from retaliation by landlords when they report hazards. For more information about how lead laws can lower the incidence of lead poisoning in children without incurring huge remediation costs, see Common Councilor Joe Driscoll’s July 7 discussion here with Katrina Korfmacher (U. of Rochester) and Elizabeth McDade (Rochester’s Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning) on the City of Rochester’s 90% drop in child lead poisoning cases since the enactment of Rochester’s Lead Law 20 years ago. They provide invaluable insights into data on housing, health and university research that has assisted the City of Rochester to refine policies and practices over the years.
