Action Alerts – Week of September 28

CNY Solidarity members and supporters:

Please find below the weekly ACTION ALERTS from Indivisible NY24 and our legislative action teams.

The election is in 5 weeks. Following up on our conversation at yesterday’s meeting, I’m hoping that everyone on this email list will devote some time to helping folks register to vote (by Oct. 9), helping folks cast their votes (on or before Nov. 3), and/or helping to protect the results once everyone has voted.

Today (Sept 28)

Pass the Right to Know Act

The Syracuse Common Council is voting TODAY on the Right to Know Act, which would require Syracuse police officers to identify themselves, tell people why they’re being stopped, and ask for consent if a search is intended. See https://spaarc315.org/?page_id=41 for more info.

The bill is on the Council’s agenda for today (9/28, 1 PM). If you live or work in Syracuse, please call the Common Council office (315-448-8466) or your District Councilor and ask them to support it. You can also attend the meeting via WebEx – find the link in the City Hall calendar:  (http://www.syrgov.net/City_Hall.aspx )

Tuesday (Sept. 29)

Text-Banking and Letter-Writing to Voters

Every Tuesday at 7pm, Indivisible NY24 will gather on Zoom while we reach out to voters in key states/districts targeted by Indivisible. Zoom link will be distributed Tuesday morning on the Indivisible NY24 email list. If you haven’t previously completed the online training, you can’t do the text-banking with this platform, but letter-writing is open to all. If anyone would prefer to try phone-banking with Indivisible’s platform, let me know and I’ll help you get set up.

Presidential Debate

The first presidential debate is scheduled for 9pm tonight.

Wednesday (Sept 30)

We’ve Got Less than Two Weeks to Register Voters for Nov. 3

Onondaga VOTES! continues to work on Syracuse’s South Side to register voters and to Get Out the Vote. If you’d like to volunteer go to this link https://signup.com/go/XZBRRWf to find all the dates, times and locations. Or email Joan Durant at joandurant69@gmail.com for a list of opportunities.

In addition, if you would like an 8.5 x 11 Get-Out-The Vote poster, designed by Elaine Denton, for your office, faith community, neighborhood businesses, etc., contact Elaine Wolf at elainewolf0148@gmail.com.

Thursday (Oct. 1)

Protect the Results

Over the past week, there has been substantial media attention devoted to the possibility that President Trump may try to contest or ignore the election results if he loses. (Note, e.g., Barton Gellman’s “The Election that Could Break America” and Jeffrey Toobin’s “The Legal Fight Awaiting us after the Election.”) If it comes to that, defending the election results may require mass, sustained, non-violent demonstrations nationwide. If you haven’t done so already, please sign up at https://protecttheresults.com/. This effort is led by a national coalition of progressive groups, including Indivisible. Signing up will allow you to be quickly informed of protest plans, locally and nationally. If anyone is interested in helping to organize local actions (again, if necessary), please let me know.

Friday (Oct. 2)

Call Katko Out on His Negative Ads

During the 2018 election cycle, Rep. Katko ran a series of offensive and misleading negative ads. He’s been doing so again this year, and they’ve been getting worse. He’s currently running one in which a dark figure in a hoodie holding a knife is shown while the ad warns of the release of “dangerous criminals” from prison. Katko approved the ad and it was paid for by the Katko for Congress Committee. It is reminiscent of the infamous Willie Horton ad of the 1988 George H.W. Bush campaign. If you’re disgusted by these ads, please take a moment to write a letter to the editor to the Post-Standard or another local outlet calling him out.

Saturday (Oct. 3)

Reach out to Voters in CNY

Dana Balter’s campaign has daily phone-banking events on Zoom and regular text-banking events as well. Many of the events are run jointly with other local progressive campaigns. Check the list here and sign up.

You’re receiving this email because you’re subscribed to the CNY Solidarity Coalition announcements list. This is a low-volume list (typically no more than 4-6 messages per week), which now has more than 2,000 subscribers. We also maintain higher-volume listservs as venues for discussion of general Coalition-wide issues (discussion-cnysolidarity), key state and local action team organizing priorities (stateleg-cnysolidarity), and key Indivisible NY24 organizing priorities (IndivisibleNY24). The latter list includes more frequent action alerts and information about local electoral campaigns supported by Indivisible. If you’d like to be added to any of these lists, please reply to me and let me know which ones.
