Invest in Our New York

Update: We won! $4.3 billion in new progressive tax revenue, while not enough, is a huge victory. By raising essential revenue from the wealthiest New Yorkers to support low-income, immigrant and Black and brown communities, we are starting to build a state where all of us can afford to live. Read the IONY coalition’s statement, as final budget agreements were reached. Of course, there is still work to be done. This budget provides no meaningful relief to the over 92,000 New Yorkers sleeping in shelters and streets across the state, nor did it make critical investments to reverse historically high overdose deaths that continue to grow. The budget does not guarantee the state can continue to fund schools, healthcare, and housing for the long-term. Locally, the next IONY Planning Team Meeting is April 25, at the CNY Solidarity Zoom Meeting at 3pm. Contact Peter (pmccar1100@gmail.com) or Keller (Keller.shelton@gmail.com) Agenda: What next? The long term struggle to enact fair taxes in New York. SPC is a supporting organization.

War and Global Warming: We Can’t Save the Planet Without Taking on the Pentagon. View the webinar recording from the Beyond War and Militarism Committee’s recent webinar.

Environmentalist/peace activist Pat Hynes spoke eloquently about the intricate connections between militarism, oil and climate change, and the apocalyptic role the Pentagon is taking in climate crises worldwide at a recent event organized by Beyond War and Militarism Committee of SPC and the CNY Solidarity Coalition.

“Activists don’t just want justice for Judson Albahm’s killing. They want change” by Maggie Hicks in the Daily Orange summarizes the recent police killing of 17-year-old Judson Albahm, who was experiencing a mental health crisis, and discusses alternatives to a police response. Of particular note is a graph showing the percentage of Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office patrol deputies certified as crisis intervention officers. It is 12%.

“Syracuse, on White House radar, should oppose highway designation for I-81 teardown” by Robert Steuteville is subtitled, “The replacement for Interstate 81 in the heart of Syracuse should be designed and built on the scale of a city street, giving the city an economic shot in the arm.” Published by The Congress for New Urbanism, a long supporter of removing the viaduct through Syracuse, the article gives some background and recommendations, and offers  a warning. “In order to accomplish the goal of reconnecting neighborhoods, a critical decision must be made. That choice isto not designate the replacement road as a ‘Business Loop, Qualifying Highway.’ … it sounds innocent enough. The key words, however, are ‘qualifying highway.’ That designation would drive design choices that will turn the Community Grid into a surface highway through downtown, which is what the renderings from the draft Environmental Impact Statement show.”

Religious Leaders Support Transition Off of Fossil Fuels – Press Conference via Zoom
April 19, Monday – 2 PM    Please register

Religious leaders representing over 400,000 people of faith across upper NY state signed on to a statement calling for a transition away from fossil fuels. Leaders of many faiths: Christian, Jewish, Muslim …  including Native American leaders agree we need to start action now to  fend off the worst impacts of the climate crisis.
This Earth Day the planet has warmed about 1.1. degree C (2 deg F) compared to pre-industrial times.  Unless we take significant steps to reduce carbon emissions Earth will warm by 1.5 deg C this decade.
‘We hope this statement will spark a community wide discussion across political parties on the steps we need to take to ensure that future generations will have a world they can thrive in,” says Peter Wirth, CCAA
The NYS Climate Leadership Community Protection Act passed in 2020 mandates a 40% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030 .  We need to start planning on the local level how we will reduce our carbon emissions in order to help the state meet its goal.

Speakers:
Episcopal Bishop DeDe Duncan-Probe

Oren Lyons – an internationally known Indigenous, human rights and climate change activist
Professor Robert Howarth – climate scientist, Cornell University

Our action, World on Fire!, cries out that the U.S. military is wounding our climate 24/7 and if we want our children to have a livable future, this must be stopped. Drone warfare is one component of the vast military mega machine which consumes fossil fuels relentlessly. The U.S. military is the single biggest institutionalized emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, more than most nation-states. What we stand for is what we stand on, our lovely planet Earth.

We allocate the funds in coordination with the Workers Center of Central New York to assist individuals with paying rent, buying food, accessing transportation, and meeting other basic needs.

Syracuse Peace Council really needs our support now – and many of us are receiving $1,400 checks (or more if we have a partner or children). Many of our neighbors desperately need those funds for food, housing and other basic necessities. Others of us have the capacity to donate some, or all of that money.

During the Trump era SPC played important support roles:

·       Helping found and provide significant organizational support to the CNY Solidarity Coalition

·       Participating actively in SPAARC (Syracuse Police Accountability and Reform Coalition) and advocating for the demilitarization of the police

·       Working with a broad coalition of local progressive organizations to protect the 2020 election results

·       Supporting Indigenous-led organizing to remove the Columbus statue in downtown Syracuse

And, SPC’s ongoing projects – Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation, Beyond War and Militarism,, Nuclear Free World,  and Justice for Palestine – continue their long-term educational and advocacy work.

This work needs our financial support to continue, and ideally to expand. SPC has suffered financially during the pandemic, but has carried on a high level of activity with limited resources.

The impact of Black-led organizations cannot be overstated. If we just look at what they’ve done in the last year, Black activists have been at the front lines of the ongoing struggle for racial and economic equality. All the while, they had the vision to organize, register, and activate voters across the country. The work is only just getting started, which is why these organizations deserve all the support we can give.

These are six of the most high-impact, cost-effective, evidence-based organizations. You may not have heard of them. “Founders Pledge, an organization that guides entrepreneurs committed to donating a portion of their proceeds to effective charities, used these same criteria to assess climate organizations. Its comprehensive report, released in 2018, informed my research and the list below. As in that report, I’ve chosen to look at groups focused on mitigation (tackling the root causes of climate change by reducing emissions) rather than adaptation (decreasing the suffering from the impacts of climate change). Both are important, but the focus of this piece is preventing further catastrophe.”
