Action Alerts – Week of May 10, 2021

CNY Solidarity members and supporters:

Please find below the weekly ACTION ALERTS from Indivisible NY24.

Locally, we encourage everyone to check out the good work at Flip the Onondaga County Legislature. We’ve got multiple progressive candidates on the ballot this year, and they need our support.

Nationally, our main focus remains on democracy reform, including S. 1: For the People Act (a big package of voting rights, gerrymandering, campaign finance, and ethics reforms), H.R. 4: John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (which would restore provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Acts that have been gutted by Supreme Court), and S. 51: Washington, DC Admission Act, which passed the House last week. Passing these measures will likely require reform of Senate filibuster rules, and doing so is necessary to break the downward “doom loop” of democratic erosion.

At the State level, for the first time, a majority of state legislators in the Assembly and Senate are supporting the NY Health Act (A6058/S5474) , which makes healthcare a guaranteed right to all NYers by setting up a comprehensive universal, single-payer healthcare program (learn more about the Health Act here). However, bill introduction is not assured – see New York State Could Finally Get Single-Payer Health Care by Liza Featherstone in Jacobin. Join us this week and every week until early June to put consistent pressure on our representatives to propose and pass this historic bill.

Now, on to the Weekly alerts

Tuesday (May 11)

Support Democracy Reform in the Senate

Continue to call Senators Schumer and Gillibrand to pass “For the People Act” (S.1) and “DC Statehood” (S.51) now that DC statehood has passed the House, there’s no reason that the Senate can’t do the same. We cannot let the filibuster get in the way of our democracy. Call your senators and demand they pass S. 1 without letting the filibuster get in the way, and then call back and demand the same for S. 51.

Wednesday (May 12)

Support the THRIVE Act.

Call Rep. Katko to make sure he will support the THRIVE Act. The THRIVE Act was just introduced in Congress! This is our chance to pass comprehensive legislation that will address the interconnected crises of a global pandemic, mass unemployment, systemic racism, and our changing climate. Use this link to contact Rep. Katko to ensure the principles of THRIVE all included in our Recovery Priorities. Then, use this link to contact Senators Schumer and Gillibrand And to learn more about the THRIVE agenda, click here for a resource with more information

Support #PassNYHealth

Phone, email or tweet to your state representatives to #PassNYHealth!  Using this simple online tool — call, email and tweet at your elected officials in the Senate and Assembly, asking them to pass the New York Health Act this year. Many of our local representatives have committed to co-sponsoring the NY Health Act. For those who have co-sponsored  – Senator May, Assemblymembers Hunter, Magnarelli and Stirpe, please thank them and ask that they make their support public. Senator Mannion needs additional encouragement from constituents to co-sponsor this important legislation.

You’re receiving this email because you’re subscribed to the CNY Solidarity Coalition announcements list. This is a low-volume list (typically no more than 4-6 messages per week), which now has more than 2,000 subscribers. We also maintain higher-volume listservs as venues for discussion of general Coalition-wide issues (discussion-cnysolidarity), key state and local action team organizing priorities (stateleg-cnysolidarity), and key Indivisible NY24 organizing priorities (IndivisibleNY24). The latter list includes more frequent action alerts and information about local electoral campaigns supported by Indivisible. If you’d like to be added to any of these lists, please reply to me and let me know which ones.
