We had two important presentations, both related to upcoming election issues.
· John Deer spoke on the Flip the Leg effort to flip the majority in the County Legislature. https://www.fliptheleg.com In the process of the 2019 campaign, all but two of the GOP Legislature Candidates signed the Fair Maps CNY pledge to support fair, non-partisan, and independent redistricting. On July 7, 2020, every Republican Legislator voted against fair redistricting, allowing for the possibility of Gerrymandered districts to be put in place for the next decade. John mentioned four races that are critical:
o Jana Rogers, District 5
o Heather Waters, District 10
o Ryan Suser, District 11
o Dr. Shanelle Benson Reid, District 14
And two other that are possible wins:
o Dr. Sunny Aslam, District 12
o Matt Johnson, District 3

· Maya K. van Rossum, Founder of the Green Amendment For The Generations Movement. The goal of the Green Amendments For The Generations is to advance a Green Amendment movement that sweeps the nation and secures for all people constitutional recognition and protection of their inalienable rights to pure water, clean air, a stable climate and healthy environments. The Green Amendment is now on the ballot in NYS! It would “establish the right of each person to clean air and water and a healthful environment”.

NY Attorney General files lawsuit against Syracuse landlord over child lead poisoning
According to the latest data available from the Onondaga County Health Department, about 9% of children in Syracuse have a dangerous level of lead in their blood. The rate jumps to between 20 and 30% in neighborhoods on the Southside.

We are pleased to announce the return of the Pathway of Resistance walking tour, examining the African-American experience on and along the banks of the Erie Canal, from the waterway’s beginnings to contemporary times. We will present this in-person program on alternating Thursdays and Saturdays at 1 p.m. starting on August 26th. While the legacies of slavery and systemic racism can be uncomfortable to discuss, it is crucial for these issues to be be addressed and to understand how these legacies continue to impact our society today. Because we believe that the issues presented in this tour are very important, the program is free of charge. We do, however, encourage a donation of $10 per person.
The tour begins at the corner of Montgomery Street and Erie Boulevard in downtown Syracuse, just outside the Museum garden. Per CDC guidelines, face masks are encouraged but not required for outdoor programs at the Erie Canal Museum. Free parking is available in the lot across from the Museum, under routes 81 and 690. We hope you’ll join us!

The three Mayoral Candidates will field questions about their vision to create a sustainable future for the City of Syracuse. Chris Bolt, WAER News and Public Affairs Director, will moderate the forum which will be recorded for airing at a subsequent date on WAER-FM 88.3, and archived for later access.
Our moderator will be reviewing and aggregating questions from the three sponsoring organizations, as well as questions submitted by the public, to create a focused event, highlighting the most important sustainability issues facing the City. This creates a strange situation for Americans, largely protected from the harsh consequences of war, and yet citizens of a country using lethal force across the globe. We generally find out about the extent of our involvement only when US soldiers die, resulting in a bizarre circumstance for Americans trying to understand their citizenship, and their humanity, in relation to the killing done in our name. What does it mean to be a citizen of a country that is not at peace, but doesn’t seem to believe it’s at war? Klay’s speech will try to offer some answers to that question. Join Women of Italian and Syracuse Heritage in Central New York (WISH CNY), Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON), and Resilient Indigenous Action Collective (RIAC) as we gather at the Columbus monument to lay his false hero image to rest and pay respect to the multitude of victims of genocidal violence past and present that resulted from the impact of colonialism. Speakers include Maryann Zeppetello and Natalie LoRusso of WISH CNY and RIAC members Ionah and Danielle. Colleen Kattau, a local singer, song writer, and educator, will lead us in song. We will complete our gathering in collective silence as we stand in a powerful visual demonstration. At the conclusion of this event, we will walk as a group to the Everson Museum of Art Plaza for Refocus: Haudenosaunee Films to Celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
