What the Five Ballot Proposal Questions Mean for New Yorkers this November
They include questions on the future of political representation in Albany, environmental protections, easier voter registration and absentee balloting, and how New York’s civil courts function.
Vote YES on all 5 proposals: Recommendation by the CNY Solidarity Coordinating Committee
Note: Prop. 1 is opposed by some groups. The League of Women Voters has concerns about limits on the power of minority parties (https://lwvny.org ). However, we feel that improvements outweigh the concerns.
The issues on Proposals 2-5 are more clear-cut, and we strongly recommend YES votes.

They have finally put up all maps to be discussed on November 3rd on their website here (scroll down to Maps).

The maps the Democrats have put forward are 1.0 and 1,5, The GOP have put forward 2.0.
While there has been a lot of public comment on extending the process, there has not been as much on a map preference. Please make a public comment if you can, and if you prefer one of the maps also make that comment. If there is any chance of slowing this down or getting favorable maps we need a strong public comment period.

Armistice Day for Peace

The Syracuse chapter of Veterans for Peace (VFP) and the Beyond War and Militarism Committee (BW&M) call upon all veterans and people who wish to commemorate the true meaning of Armistice Day to gather in remembrance of the millions killed, wounded, widowed, imprisoned, orphaned, and displaced by war. Mayor Walsh will join us and issue a Proclamation declaring the Eleventh Day of November 2021 to be Armistice Day for Peace in the City of Syracuse. In the continual effort to reclaim Armistice Day they will honor military resisters as a step toward ending war. “We will gather in this solemn manner, not to pay homage to the weapons of destruction, but to renew our commitment to work to end all wars and to foster peace and justice, at home and abroad.” We will exercise appropriate social distancing and require all to wear masks. In remembrance of ALL victims of war, we will wear white poppies.
Syracuse Law Symposium to Address the Threat of ‘Executive Authoritarianism’

University Professor David Driesen’s important new book—”The Specter of Dictatorship: Judicial Enabling of Presidential Power” (Stanford, 2021)—reveals how the U.S. Supreme Court’s presidentialism threatens democracy and what the United States can do about it.
To celebrate the publication of the new book, Syracuse Law Review is presenting a daylong symposium that will address Driesen’s major themes in panels that bring together the nation’s top legal scholars of constitutional law, the Supreme Court and the rule of law. The American Constitution Society and the Federalist Society are event co-sponsors.

Workshop: Change the World: Organizing for Social Justice
Event by RiseUp for Social Action
The workshop will be facilitated by Aly Wane and Andy Mager of RiseUp Social Action Training and Education. It is being presented as part of the Conflict Management Center’s ongoing workshop series at Syracuse University.
The training will provide a hands-on introduction to skills needed to organize effectively for social change on a campus and in the community. Participants will learn to identify stakeholders and potential allies, develop out reach strategies and build a campaign on issues of concern to them.
The session, which will include roleplaying and other interactive learning exercises, will be valuable for newcomers and those already engaged in social action.
Andy Mager and Aly Wane of RiseUp for Social Action will facilitate the workshop. Andy and Aly bring over 60 years of combined organizing experience in Central New York. They have worked with many social movements, including those for peace, clean energy, immigrant and worker justice, racial justice, economic justice, environmental protection and food justice.

First of all, THANK YOU for continuing to support our work. Some of you have come through with generous funds and you may know about our network of drivers helping us with rides and with our much needed monthly food deliveries to approximately 30 households in Syracuse and Central New York.
SIRDN has been able to resettle someone in one of the local “TinyHomeforGood” apartments! We are all very happy about this unexpected positive outcome. He is also well supported with food through Meals-on-Wheels and the UUMC Food Pantry. We are are hoping that Medicaid will approve personal care hours. WE WILL, HOWEVER, NEED ONGOING FINANCIAL SUPPORT to pay rent of $ 350/month. Please reach out to us if you are interested in helping with this. Even a small monthly donation would be helpful. We are also reconfiguring how we do food deliveries. Our 7-month association with Sankofa’s Food Pantry is coming to an end and we are looking to connect each family with a food pantry that is closer to them, and to establish teams of 2-3 drivers for each local group of families who will “adopt” this group of families and take care of the monthly deliveries as a group. Again, if you are interested in helping out with these deliveries, even just as a substitute we can reach out to, or as a member of a team that takes turns, please write an email to Sirdn315@gmail.com (The same is true if you think you might be able to help with rides every so often!)
Last, but not least, we are an advocacy organization. As you might know, not much has happened in terms of improving the immigration system or creating a path for citizenship since the Biden administration took office. For sure, it’s a complicated subject. If you would like to learn more and help us advocate for the MANY people living in this country without rights and/or viable immigration status, please reach out to us! We need people to come to vigils, to write to Senator Schumer, and more. We hold Zoom meetings every other Tuesday, and would very much welcome new members. SIRDN315@gmail.com
