Join us for the second discussion on poverty in Syracuse in our 2018 Civics on Tap series. This event will feature Leah Russell, of the Center for Court Innovation and Peacemaking Center, Lou Vinciguerra of Yeshua Restoration Ministries and Devin White, of 100 Black Men of Syracuse.
This event will feature a discussion on service which works with community members in close partnership to address challenges related to poverty.

Join us as we commemorate the tragedies of Hiroshima Day & Nagasaki Day, and march with hope for a peaceful future and a world free of nuclear weapons and nuclear power.

The atrocities at Hiroshima and Nagasaki mark the beginning of the age of nuclear terror. In opposing the use of nuclear power and weapons, we also remember the melt-downs and explosions at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant and the Chernobyl reactor. The horrific effects of nuclear disasters in all these places have and continue to cause immense suffering.
The U.S. continues to engage in international war-posturing, including threats of nuclear war with weapons hundreds of times
more powerful than the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs.

We will gather BEHIND City Hall Commons between 11:30-12, step off at 12 pm and march to the Everson museum. The march is about 45 minutes long, and we will close with some short speeches on the ongoing relevance of this day amidst the current global nuclear threat.

We will need many volunteers - more info to follow! Please contact SPC or michaela@peacecouncil.net if you'd like to get involved in the planning or take on a role in the procession itself.

On Tuesday July 31st, 10 brave activists occupied ICE offices at 401 South Salína St where they delivered an eviction notice to ICE. Their nonviolent direct action was part of a larger action calling for ICE to be abolished.

The 10 who blocked ICE's entrance were detained, arrested and held until their arraignment later that night, the judge released them on their own recognizance and they were finally released from detention around midnight.

All of them were given orders of appearance for Monday August 6th at 1:30pm in the downstairs courtroom with Judge Andrew. We are asking the community to come to the courthouse in support of the #AbolishICE 10 activists. Meet outside the courthouse at 1:15pm, no photo ID is necessary but you will need to pass thru metal detectors. We are unsure how long it will take for all 10 to be seen as there will be about 30 other people with court appearances that day.

Moms Demand Action Meeting
August 9th 6PM - 7:30PM at Manlius Library
This meeting is for people ready to get more involved and take action to prevent gun violence. We will be talking about what we have accomplished, our plan for what is next and asking people to sign up to help.

Please feel free to bring your teen or college student and children are always welcome at our meetings.

Syracuse Bike Share Community Meeting

Join the City of Syracuse and Adapt CNY to give your feedback and ideas on the Syracuse Bike Share Program, coming later this year!

The City has selected Gotcha Bike, an experienced vendor that operated in more than 20 cities across the United States, and will be joining us on August 14 at 5:30 PM in the City Hall Commons Atrium, located at 201 East Washington Street. Representatives from Gotcha Bike will share more information about how the system will work and ask your ideas and feedback about how the system should be rolled out, where bike units should be located, and how to make the system inclusive for all Syracuse residents and visitors to use. The meeting will feature a presentation and discussion about the current needs of immigrants and refugees in Central New York. This will be followed by announcements and committee breakout meetings.

As you may have seen in the Post-Standard, Honeywell and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation have announced their planned remedy for the Wastebed B / Harbor Brook site, located on both sides of I-690 at the south end of Onondaga Lake.

Environmental friends and advocates from Neighbors of Onondaga Nation recommend some key points if you are interested in attending this hearing.

Key points:

Parts of this site are highly toxic.
This remedy condemns the southern end of the lake to forever be a “waste management area.” 
 Onondaga County has plans to extend the West Shore Trail across this property. 
 To fully clean up the site, it would cost $1.3 billion. Instead, the proposed remedy is for the $12 million soil and asphalt cover remedy. 
When comparing remedies, the draft plan fails to account for the cost of the long-term maintenance of their preferred remedy, the “waste management area.”
Public comment is poorly timed. The sole public hearing and the bulk of the public comment period are slated for August, a time when many people are on vacation and when many community groups aren’t meeting. DEC should extend the public comment period by an additional 30 days to ensure that the public has a real chance to consider and comment on this plan.

Summary: In 2014, before the Skä·noñh—Great Law of Peace Center had officially opened, we held a first conference titled “The Doctrine of Discovery: After Repudiation, What Next?” About 40 delegates from different faith traditions attended. This year’s conference builds on the 2014 meeting. The Skä·noñh Center is now open and it is a good context from which to draw the values of the Haudenosaunee to affect positive change. As with the previous meeting, we will first to learn about the devastating impacts of the Doctrine of Discovery first hand from the Haudenosaunee, to understand its history, and then to share strategies for addressing this 500+ year-old ongoing human rights violation. Then we will hear from one another and the ways in which religious and faith communities are pushing back against the Doctrine of Discovery. There will be a traditional foods banquet on the evening of Saturday the 18th followed by screening of the film “Spirit Game: Pride of a Nation” and panel discussion.
