Action Alerts – Week of March 5th

Monday (March 5)

Legislation to Unleash Banks on us Again: Call Senators Gillibrand (315) 448-0470 and Schumer (315-423-5471) and ask them to vote no on S. 2155, which exempts some big banks from Dodd-Frank reforms and demolishes standards for fair mortgage lending. More detail here.

Tuesday (March 6)

Curtail Trump’s Warmaking Power in Yemen: One of the biggest threats Trump poses to our democracy stems from the possibility of him starting a war to justify curtailing elections or other measures. Call Senators Gillibrand (315) 448-0470 and Schumer (315-423-5471) and ask them to vote for a Bill sponsored by Bernie Sanders (I=VT) and Mike Lee (R-UT) to stop Trump’s current unauthorized war in Lebanon. More information is here. This bill will help restore Congress’ war power under the Constitution.

Wednesday (March 7)

Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act: Contact Senators Gillibrand (315) 448-0470 and Schumer (315-423-5471) and find out their positions on this bill, which would allow people from states with weak gun control laws to carry concealed weapons in our state without complying with New York gun control laws. Urge them to vote no. More information is here.

Thursday (Mar 8)

Assembly member Magnarelli is holding a Community Information Night at Henninger High School at 6:30 p.m.

Friday (March 9)

Sanction Russia for Interfering in Our Elections: On August 2, 2017 Congress overwhelmingly passed and the President signed the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, which, required sanctions against Russia in early February absent certain findings. Trump neither imposed the sanctions nor made the required findings to avoid them. Tell Senators Gillibrand (315) 448-0470 and Schumer (315-423-5471) that they should lead an effort to announce that Democrats will support Trump’s impeachment if those sanctions are not imposed. Some Dems are treating this as an ordinary oversight matter, which is an approach that will only work in the unlikely event that Trump is willing to faithfully execute law aimed at punishing Putin for his interference in the 2016 election on Trump’s behalf.

Call John Katko (202-225-3701). Make sure his staff informs him that the Sanctions Act is law, passed by Congress and that Trump has disobeyed it. Ask him what he plans to do to make sure that sanctions are applied as required by the statute.
