The Syracuse area hosts Hancock Air National Guard base where the Guard’s 174th Attack Wing conducts drone assassination and target identification missions using MQ-9 Reaper drone in Afghanistan and probably elsewhere. Syracuse Peace Council’s Street Heat holds a twice monthly presence outside Hancock Airbase to call for an end to the illegal and immoral killing of human beings by weaponized drones, which are piloted remotely from the base.

Titled after the Spanish translation for “dreams” and in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Sueños: Celebrating the Surreal highlights works by contemporary Latin American artists in Syracuse University’s permanent collections that share in the characteristics of dream-like imagery.
Featuring works by Salvador Dalí, Mauricio Lasansky, Joseph Kugielsky, Adàl Maldonado, Pedro Roth, and more. This exhibition is a collaborative project between Community Folk Art Center, Light Work, Point of Contact Gallery, and Syracuse University Art Galleries.

Recovery for Tomorrow

Recovery for Tomorrow supports hope and healing for people in our community who are working towards recovery from the effects of substance use, mental health disorders, and other health issues. Right now, the community need for these services is greater than ever and your support is crucial.
Portraits of Hope reflects the diversity of those impacted by behavioral health disorders. With the Recovery Arts Exhibit, Wall of Hope, silent auction, live artists, and debut of the Recovery for Tomorrow video, this event will help raise funds, awareness, and most importantly hope.

Urban Cinematheque 2018: Black Panther

Explore the art scene in Syracuse with a FREE screening of the visually stunning afrofuturistic blockbuster BLACK PANTHER (dir. Ryan Coogler) at Urban Cinematheque 2018 Art & Culture Fair.
The feature-length film will be projected onto the north facade of the iconic Everson Museum Art in downtown Syracuse! Dozens of local arts and cultural organizations will be on hand with arts activities and information about upcoming events, exhibitions, and opportunities to get involved.
Food trucks + free popcorn and lemonade!
Audience members are advised to bring blankets or portable chairs. Limited seating will be available on a first come, first served basis. Street parking, as well as pay parking lots, are ample in the immediate vicinity.
Charter buses leave from and return to the Schine Student Center (Waverly Ave.) on the Syracuse University Campus Center every 15 minutes from 7–11:15 p.m.

It’s not too late to do your spring cleaning! Reduce—get rid of unwanted stuff. Reuse—your unwanted stuff is someone’s treasure. Recycle—down with planned obsolescence.
Items wanted: household and sporting goods, books, DVDs, games, toys, furniture, linens, tools, plants, art, jewelry, lamps, holiday items, appliances and more. Please NO clothing, old electronics, things that don’t work or other miscellaneous junk.
Donations are eagerly accepted from Wednesday-Friday, September 5th-7th between noon and 8pm each day. Items can be left outside the garage at the sale location.

Street School with the OG’s

Syracuse DSA will be co-hosting a Street School event with OG’s Against Gun Violence. In this tour our guide Clifford Ryan will be guiding us through Syracuse’s history of of racial injustice and inner-city violence for an hour in the Elmwood neighborhood. Following this we will be doing an hour of litter pickup in the areas we walked!
Don’t worry about taking anything but water, as Syracuse DSA will be bringing grabbers, bags, and gloves!
Invisible People: Portraits of the Homeless by Neil Shigley

Please Join us for the Opening Reception of Invisible People: Portraits of the Homeless by Neil Shigley. Free and Open to the Public.
San Diego based artist Neil Shigley’s work explores the subject of homelessness by giving visibility to homeless individuals through large-scale portraits.
This exhibition is in partnership with In My Father’s Kitchen, the homeless outreach organization. During this special opening reception, In My Father’s Kitchen will host an Open House and musician, Colin Aberdeen will perform in the IMFK’s parking lot next to ArtRage.

Beneath the Surface at OHA, Sundays in September

Beneath the Surface: The Storied History of Onondaga Lake covers the amazing history of the lake and the remarkable impact it has had on our American Way of Life over the past six centuries.
The film begins at 2:00pm at the Onondaga Historical Association Auditorium on September 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th. Admission is $5 for OHA Members and $7 for the general public available at the door only.
SCSD Public Hearing – District-Wide Safety Plan

The Syracuse City School District Board of Education will hold a Public Hearing in the District Board Room. The proposed District Safety Plan will be presented at the beginning.
The Public Hearing is an opportunity for all interested parties to provide comments and questions regarding the District’s Safety Plan. The Plan document will be available on the District’s website, and the public comment period will be open for 30 days.
The public is invited to attend. Those who wish to address the Board of Education regarding the District Safety Plan should make this known to the District Clerk to the Board of Education before the Hearing begins by filling out the appropriate card, available near the entrance door to the Board Room. Speakers are asked to limit their comments to no more than three minutes.
Syracuse Lead Prevention Coalition
Monday September 10th 6 PM – 7:30 PM @ 500 W Genesee St, Syracuse
Syracuse has one of the nation’s highest rates of lead exposure for children. Our monthly meetings have brought together concerned citizens, non-profit workers, elected officials, and other community organizers.
This month we will be developing an action plan, and discussing the path forward with coalition building. We will be joined by Legal Services CNY, and hear about their efforts canvassing and community outreach.
Please come join us and build the political to create long term, sustainable change.
