Here are some additional action items this week.
1) We have reason to be concerned that positive lead tests in the city may result in the evictions of residents whose landlords fail to comply with orders to resolve the issue of lead exposure. Though the problem seems to arise from a lack of coordination among agencies, this nevertheless amounts to violence compounding violence. We are calling on CNY Solidarity members and supporters to contact Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon (click this link: http://ongov.net/executive/contact.html) and ask him to restructure the county’s response when a child tests high for lead to ensure that all county agencies work together to:
a) address the child’s health needs;
b) explain the impacts of lead exposure;
c) make the home safe or assist the family with relocation resources;
d) hold landlords responsible and make them accountable.
2) Deka Dancil at the Shonnard Street Boys & Girls Club is organizing a trip to Philadelphia, PA in April to reward members’ commitment to the club’s Passport to Manhood program. In the program, young men learn the club code, communication skills, and respect for themselves as well as others. The trip to Philadelphia includes a visit to the African Museum and an NBA basketball game (76’ers vs. Bulls). In order to make the trip possible, the Club needs to raise another $750. If 38 people contribute a donation of $20, we can help fund the trip. Donations can be dropped off at the Club from Monday-Friday (12pm to 7pm) or can be sent to Boys & Girls Club, 201 Shonnard, Syracuse, NY 13204.
3) The public comment period on Con Ed’s gas moratorium in Westchester, NY is ending on Thursday, 2/28, at 5pm. Tell Governor Cuomo and the NY Public Service Commission that the answer to the moratorium is RENEWABLE ENERGY, not more fracked gas infrastructure. To learn more, please click here:
