Action Alerts – Week of March 22, 2021

CNY Solidarity members and supporters:
Please find below the weekly ACTION ALERTS from Indivisible NY24.

Our main focus nationally remains on democracy reform, including H.R. 1: For the People Act (a big package of voting rights, gerrymandering, campaign finance, and ethics reforms), H.R. 4: John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (which would restore provisions of the 1965 VRA that have been gutted by Supreme Court), and H.R. 51: Washington, DC Admission Act (which would finally grant statehood and full congressional representation to D.C. residents).

H.R. 1 has passed the House (despite a NO vote from Rep. Katko). The other two bills are on track for House passage as well. But for any of them to pass the Senate will likely require reform or repeal of existing filibuster rules. We expect this fight to take weeks or months, but have no clear sense of when precisely it will come to a head. We’re in conversation with Schumer and Gillibrand staff and will post updates as we have them. In the meantime, some of us have been reading Adam Jentleson’s Kill Switch, a helpful and disturbing account of the history of the Senate’s filibuster rules. (Short version: From their inception, these rules have mostly been used to block civil rights and voting rights bills.)

At the state level, we’re monitoring some key democracy-reform issues as well (including a bill to restore voting rights for formerly incarcerated persons), but for the moment, most of our attention is on the budget process and the Invest in Our New York campaign. On this front, note the Tuesday action below, or click here for more ways to get involved.

And now, on to the week’s actions.

This is a low-volume list (typically no more than 4-6 messages per week), which now has more than 2,000 subscribers. We also maintain higher-volume listservs as venues for discussion of general Coalition-wide issues (discussion-cnysolidarity), key state and local action team organizing priorities (stateleg-cnysolidarity), and key Indivisible NY24 organizing priorities (IndivisibleNY24). The latter list includes more frequent action alerts and information about local electoral campaigns supported by Indivisible. If you’d like to be added to any of these lists, please reply to me and let me know which ones.
