- Dustin Czarny, Onondaga County Democratic Elections Commissioner

Friends, the time is now to speak out and do everything we can.
If you haven’t made a call yet or joined a protest, now would be the time to start. Please make a call to your representatives today (or as soon as you can). Keep them going. Here is a sample script – feel free to adapt. Thank you, we are in this boat together.
Helle, my name is (your name here) and l am a constituent in (reps name here) district. My message to the representative and your office is this – According to recent events, we are no longer operating under a Democracy where the rule of (law applies. This is a five alarm fire. The Trump administration has sent hundreds of men to a brutal prison in El Salvador with no due process and no proven evidence of a crime, terrorism or gang membership. Our government has also sent an innocent legal resident – Kilmar Abrego Carcia (who has no criminal record, is married with children and a union worker- under an “administrative error” to this deadly prison. The Supreme Court has unanimously ruled he be returned to the U.S. The Trump administration signering this ruling and continuing to call this man a terrorist.” Now they’ve said they want to send “homegrown” criminals to prison in El Salvador or elsewhere This means US emens. The president of El Salvador sale he was in support of this.
We are now learning that any of us could be called a violent criminal or a terrorist (without proven evidence) and sent away. This is a dictatorship and fascism. We wIll officially no longer be a Democracy In the United States if this lawless behavior continues unchecked. We need (representative’s name here) to sound the alarm on this out loud on social media, to the press, on the floor, at town halls, with colleagues, at an emergency press conference. We need articles of impeachment filed now, if we don’t act now, we might not be able to act later.

County refuses to release Micron’s huge impact report. Public record experts say it should
The county, so far, isn’t budging. Neither is the state, the towns of Clay and Cicero, the Onondaga County Water Authority, the state Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Department of Commerce. We’ve filed Freedom of Information Law requests with all of them, and received denials or delays. Syracuse.com has appealed the denials.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor can be found here.
If you’ve written a letter, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

County officials ask for $27M from taxpayers to buy sites for Micron suppliers or advanced manufacturers
The $27 million requested by the Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency comes after the agency has already spent or obligated $45 million on the Micron site in Clay and the related “science and technology” park across the street.
County Executive Ryan McMahon wants the new money for additional sites that could be used to lure companies that supply Micron with equipment, materials or services, or other companies involved in advanced manufacturing.

Note: There are no details on this “loan” on if, how or when taxpayers would be repaid. Please consider attending the next county legislative meeting on May 6 at 1pm or sharing your public comment with legislators at OnondagaCountyLegislature@ongov.net

The truth about Upstate migrant sweeps: cruel, overzealous, possibly unlawful (Editorial Board Opinion)
This is only the beginning of Trump’s war on migrants, immigrants and brown people in general. It is going to get worse. Whatever your political views, the inhumane tactics being employed by the Trump administration should make you queasy. The senseless waste of resources in Oswego County should make you angry.
American public opinion has begun to turn. The truth from places like Oswego County can debunk the demagoguery. The Trump administration is not making the country safer; it is making it meaner. The cruelty is the point, and the cruelty is increasingly repulsive. The ends cannot justify the means.

Robert Reich: Why we need a new free speech movement
Whether you like or dislike what’s said at universities, free speech is at the core of our democracy, and protecting it should be one of the core missions of universities, which is why America needs a new Free Speech Movement, similar to the one that broke out on college campuses 61 years ago.

Housing Challenges in the Age of Micron: April FOCUS Forum
Friday, April 25, 12:05 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Zoom. Registration is free and open to everyone.
Micron is preparing to break ground on the first of four new chip fabrication facilities this November. Meanwhile, Onondaga County is spending $27 million of taxpayer dollars if approved by the legislature on additional land near Micron to attract supply chain companies. This surge in economic development will require more housing.
How will the County and City respond to this challenge? Closer to Micron, will we build walkable “town growth centers”, as recommended by the County, where houses, apartments, and townhouses surround a retail and office core? Or will new suburban housing continue the patterns of the past: more single-family houses on large lots? How much of this new housing will be built in the City? Can the City leverage this new development to help it address its affordable housing crisis?

It also ensures that people in custody are informed of their rights before being interviewed by ICE. The act prohibits ICE and CBP from entering non-public areas of state and local property without a judicial warrant and begins the process of limiting their access to state information databases.

Onondaga County Legislative Session
Tuesday, May 6 at 1:00pm
401 Montgomery Street, Room 407 Court House
County Executive Ryan McMahon is back for $27 million of our taxpayer money to give to OCIDA to purchase more property for corporations. OCIDA has already spent more than $30 million of taxpayer money buying land for Micron. This is currently tied to amending the 2025 county budget giving $5 million for the county’s housing initiative program and $1 million for using AI to support county operations. These proposals should at least be separated to be voted on individually. With the highest concentration of poverty in the country, more families who can’t afford a place to live, there are much better uses for this money then corporate subsidies. Please attend this county legislative session to give a public comment or email your public comment to OnondagaCountyLegislature@ongov.net

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
