“Terrible things are happening outside. Poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes. Families are torn apart. Men, women, and children are separated. Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.”

Fast for Gaza
On May 22, 2025 members of Veterans for Peace (VfP) began a supported 40-day Fast for Gaza, demanding:
- a resumption of humanitarian aid, under UN authority, to Gaza; and
- that the U.S. stop arming Israel NOW!
Follow this link to FOSNA (Friends of Sabeel North America) to see the Veterans for Peace Call to Action: 2025 Gaza Fast — Friends of Sabeel North America
This action is open to all Gaza allies and people of good conscience who want an end to the genocide in Gaza, whether or not they are veterans or members of VfP. Palestine is the moral issue of our time. See this story from Chris Hedges and others.
I am reaching out to encourage others to join the national fast and some of us locally who are fasting for one day each week. If others join we could cover the entire week and plan informal events (like we get together and eat our meager 250 calories for the day?!) or protests. Please let me know if you decide to support Veterans for Peace and Palestinians in this individualized fasting! ~ Ron Van Norstrand

Protect Public Media
Early next week, the House plans to vote on a proposal that would claw back approved public media funding. We need you to speak out now to save your local public media stations. Will you take two minutes to call your Representative’s office and urge them to vote against devastating public media?
CALL YOUR LAWMAKERS – CLICK HERE EMAIL YOUR LAWMAKERS – CLICK HERE
Taking back funding would strip communities of essential services they rely on — services only public media provides. That includes life-saving emergency alerts, trusted local journalism, and educational resources proven to help children succeed in school. In rural areas, it could mean losing all access to local media – putting public safety and vital community information at risk.

Letters to the Editor – Special Urgent Request
We urge all members to make their voices heard about this “Big, Bad Bill”.
How Trump’s massive tax and spending bill would impact Central New Yorkers
From the State & Local Action Team: What are our local representatives’ position on this bill? CNY Solidarity delivered a letter to County Executive McMahon on May 6th with sign-ons from over 200 residents from across the county asking for an open town hall to be held. But we have heard no response from the county executive. With this massive bill, residents are even more concerned about the impact to our county. Where is McMahon?

Flock’s AI Cameras Are Watching Cars All Over America. They’re About To Get A Lot More Powerful.
For years, civil liberties experts have worried about Flock’s expansion. Last week, 404 Media reported that a Texas agency had used it to locate a woman who’d had a self-administered abortion across state lines. Jay Stanley, technology director at the ACLU, fretted that Flock “is trying to build a nationwide authoritarian surveillance system.”

Opinion: Continued police brutality must be met with active demands for reform
That means writing to local and state officials and demanding transparency from local police departments. Push for funding that supports mental health, housing and education resources instead of more weapons and armor for cops.
We must start and sign petitions that call for real reform, whether that’s removing school resource officers, pushing for body camera access or fighting for civilian review boards with real power.
It’s time to correct the rhetoric, not just the law.

Syracuse.com has obtained the bulk of Micron’s report, which the county and other public agencies have refused to release since December.
“…the report says: The influx of thousands of construction workers and new residents would squeeze an already tight housing market, making it even harder to find an affordable place to live. Traffic would overwhelm local roads unless expensive improvements are made, including widening major roads and building two new highway interchanges. Local governments would collect $500 million more per year, but property taxes could still rise as the demand for services does, Micron’s analysis says.”

DHS asks for 20,000 National Guard troops for immigration roundups, Pentagon reviewing request
The Department of Homeland Security has asked for 20,000 National Guard troops to assist with immigration roundups across the country, and the Pentagon is reviewing the unusual request, a U.S. official confirmed to The Associated Press. DHS asked for the troops to help carry out President Donald Trump’s “mandate from the American people to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens,” department spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said. She said DHS will ”use every tool and resource available” to do so because the “safety of American citizens comes first.”
Unlike the troops deployed at the southern border, these National Guard units would come from the states and be used to assist in deportation operations in the interior of the country.

‘Retaliatory,’ ‘vindictive,’ ‘union busting’: Local leaders trash eBay’s decision to end TCGplayer’s Syracuse operations
Ryan said: “eBay made $10.3 billion last year. I know for a fact what the employees were looking for was modest, minimal.”
“They have been at the bargaining table with eBay for over a year now,” Syracuse City Auditor Alex Marion told NewsChannel 9. “This reeks of eBay not bargaining in good faith.”

Indivisible: the mass movement leading the progressive fight against Trump
Indivisible, a progressive grassroots organization with a national office and thousands of offshoots in cities and towns around the country, grew out of a Google Doc created by Ezra Levin Leah Greenberg, when Trump won in 2016. Now, more than eight years later, the organization has matured and formed a critical flank of the opposition, using its millions of members across the country to quickly spin up town halls, rallies, educational events and protests.

The Shared Mythological History of Israel and the US (w/ Joan Scott) | The Chris Hedges Report
Chris Hedges talks to Professor Joan Scott about the late Amy Kaplan’s cultural analysis of the US and Israel’s mythological shared history and how it has manufactured consent for Israel’s atrocities.
…American exceptionalism mirrors Israeli exceptionalism. The belief that America, ordained by God to lead the world, replicates Israel’s messianic vision of itself. The two countries, because of their similar national myths, insist they are exempt from international and humanitarian law.

Syracuse candidates answer questions about tenant-focused policies as primary races near
Syracuse mayoral candidate Sharon Owens, and Common Council candidates Amir Gethers and Hanah Ehrenreich fielded questions from residents and housing advocates at a Wednesday election forum focused on the political and economic futures of Syracuse tenants.
The town hall was hosted by Tenant Bloc, a nonprofit that seeks to harness the voting and economic powers of tenants across New York, ahead of the Democratic Primary in June.
Tenant Bloc launched last month the “vote like a tenant” campaign, directing tenants, who make up 61% of Syracuse residents, to vote for candidates who support policies like “good cause” eviction, which advocates say could help prevent unjust evictions.

Syracuse, Onondaga County measures to stop lead poisoning aren’t doing enough, report finds
Onondaga County and the city of Syracuse have failed to properly enforce the measures they’ve put in place to stop children from being poisoned by lead, lead poisoning prevention advocates alleged in a new report.
Families For Lead Freedom Now’s report comes at a time when the city and county are dealing with a multi-pronged lead poisoning crisis. In both cases, County Health Department Data shows that almost every one in 10 children tested shows elevated blood lead levels, meaning they are at an even greater risk of suffering the potentially life altering health effects of lead poisoning.

UN warns of surge in acute malnutrition among Gaza’s young children
More than 2,700 children below the age of five in Gaza have been diagnosed with acute malnutrition, marking a steep increase in the number of children suffering from the serious medical condition since screening in February, the United Nations reports.
Of almost 47,000 under-fives screened for malnutrition in the second half of May, 5.8 percent (or 2,733 children) were found to be suffering from acute malnutrition, “almost triple the proportion of children diagnosed with malnutrition” three months earlier, the UN said on Thursday.

Trump’s Big Bill Packed With Religious-Right Priorities
It wasn’t long ago that congressional Republicans railed against voting for “omnibus” budget legislation, but that was before President Donald Trump demanded support for what he calls the “One Big Beautiful Bill.” As Trump rants about judges upholding the law and interfering with his efforts to rule like a king, the Republicans’ bill would even limit judges’ ability to enforce their orders.
Republican leaders have stuffed the legislation—passed by the House and now before the Senate—with provisions to please Trump and every corner of the right-wing base. Trump’s Christian nationalist allies are portraying support for the package as a way to push their anti-abortion and anti-equality social agenda under cover of the budget process, along with Trump’s priority tax cuts for billionaires and cuts to social safety net programs.

Because when we know our rights, we can defend them. Let’s get ready.
We are providing ASL and live closed-captioning services.

· You don’t need a permit to protest in response to breaking news and you don’t need a permit to march in the streets or along sidewalks, as long as you’re not obstructing traffic or access to buildings.
· When you are lawfully present in any public space, you have the right to photograph anything in plain view, including federal buildings and the police.
· If you believe your rights have been violated, when you can, write down everything you remember, get contact information for witnesses, and take photographs of any injuries.
· If you get stopped by the police, ask if you’re free to go. If they say yes, calmly walk away.
· If you get arrested, you have a right to ask why. Otherwise, say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Don’t sign, say or agree to anything without a lawyer present.
· If you get stopped by a member of the military or any law enforcement officer at a protest, you have the right to remain silent or to tell them that you’ll only answer questions in the presence of an attorney – no matter your citizenship or immigration status.

A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel).
