We wanted to take a moment to remember our friend and democracy fighter, Mary Kuhn. Mary made a difference in our community and had an impact on so many lives. She worked tirelessly for justice, was a voice for transparency and ethics reform in our county government and encouraged and supported so many in this work. We will miss her passion as we carry on getting into good trouble.

Urgent Call to Support NY 4 All!
The NY State Assembly is about to end their session. It is absolutely URGENT that we drive our message directly to NYS legislative leadership, sharing our anger and disappointment for them choosing to fail immigrant families and considering leaving without any action!!
The Senate failed to pass NY4All (S2235/A3506 Gounardes/Reyes), and the bill sat in committee in the Assembly without being brought to a vote.
WE NEED TO MAKE SURE OUR VOICE AND MORE IMPORTANTLY OUR DISAPPOINTMENT ARE HEARD!! Please take 15 MIN today to call on leadership using this Call-In document and make sure that the governor, the speaker, and the majority leader know that we had a solution, and it was not taken into account!

Help Carolina Appeal Her Asylum Case
Local Auburn community member, and Workers’ Center member Carolina Ramos Garillo is fighting to appeal her asylum case and stay in the U.S. with her son. Carolina came to the United States with her son at the end of 2018, since then, she’s done everything right in order to stay here legally.
Recently, Carolina’s asylum claim was denied after nearly 7 years of her doing all the right things. Her lawyer is willing to appeal the case, but asylum cases are complicated. It’s time consuming and difficult to obtain evidence to support claims from home countries, and it requires a knowledgeable attorney to put in many hours of work. To that end, Carolina needs to raise money to pay for her lawyer so that he can appeal her case.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found here.
If you’ve written a Letter to the Editor, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

Judge Rules Government Can’t Detain Mahmoud Khalil Under Rubio’s Reasoning
A federal judge has ruled that the government can no longer hold pro-Palestine activist Mahmoud Khalil under Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s claims that he poses a threat to national security. U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz blocked the government from deporting Khalil and ordered him to be released on Friday, but gave the government time to appeal his release.

Syracuse must do more for families drinking from lead pipes
Last year, the Syracuse Water Department reported that 10% of homes tested had lead levels higher than 70 parts per billion. That is more than seven times the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 10 parts-per-billion “action level” and more than twice as high as what tests captured in Flint, Michigan, which was 27 parts per billion. The city claims those results came from improper testing. The authors believe the pipes are the problem.

Offended by the truth? Good. White supremacy has always feared education
The war on public education is nothing new. It’s a modern tactic rooted in a long history of denying Black people access to knowledge. During slavery, it was illegal in many Southern states to teach enslaved people to read. After emancipation, white mobs burned Black schools and attacked Black educators. During Jim Crow, unequal funding and forced segregation were used to keep Black communities locked out of opportunity. Today, the tools have changed — book bans, anti-“critical race theory” laws, defunded schools — but the goal is the same: to control what Black children know and, therefore, who they can become.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.
