The lesson of history is that tyrants cannot be appeased. Appeasement only feeds their insatiable hunger for power. Tyrants prey on people who feel unsafe and vulnerable. But without mass submission, a tyrant is powerless. Do not give in.

Billboard Campaign Update
Censorship is alive and well in Central New York. We could not find a vendor who would agree to our messaging for our NYS Fair billboard campaign. We will not be silenced or tolerate censorship. We will not tone down the urgency of defeating policies that destroy our democracy. We have a tight fundraising deadline to hire outside vendors and are exploring alternative media platforms. This increases our costs.
The Fair starts August 20th, and we are calling on our members and supporters to help. No donation amount is too small. Our goal is to post banner messages during the high traffic of the NYS Fair.
Here are some examples of the messaging:
- Demand Washington UPHOLD the Constitution.
- Release the Epstein Files. Why is Washington protecting predators?
- Tariffs are taxes YOU pay.
- The Heritage Foundation is running YOUR government. Take It Back.

Enhance Public Access to Environmental Justice Siting Law Proceedings
In a promising step forward, the Environmental Justice Siting Law (EJSL) now enforces a full accounting of potential environmental and health impacts before new permits can be approved; however, there are currently major accessibility barriers to community engagement. Together, we’re calling for easier public access, transparency, and better communication in EJSL amendment proceedings.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles or other letters; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found on our website.
If you’ve written a Letter to the Editor, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

The N.Y. Farm Bureau must speak out against ICE
Across New York, immigrants are being torn from their cars, workplaces and homes. Families are being separated as parents and children are disappeared into detention centers with poor conditions and little transparency. These violent, seemingly indiscriminate arrests are morally indefensible and often illegal. To stop this, our communities need to stand together, and that includes farmers and the New York Farm Bureau.

The Medicaid fallout in CNY: Worse ER waits, staff cuts and scaled back services over time
Syracuse, NY — Historic changes to Medicaid championed by congressional Republicans and President Trump will kick thousands of Central New Yorkers off health insurance and push more uninsured into already overcrowded local emergency rooms, experts said.
“The impact goes far beyond those who lose coverage,” said Dr. Steven Hanks, president and CEO of St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center. “Our entire health system and every community we serve will feel the effects: reduced services, longer wait times, staff reductions, and the potential closure of programs and facilities.”

The Guardian view on the children of Gaza: when 17,000 die, it’s more than a mistake
A recent Israeli strike killed six Palestinian children – and four adults – as they queued for water in a refugee camp. The deaths of children may be the most terrible part of any war. As shocking as these deaths were, they are commonplace in Gaza: a classroom-worth of children have been killed each day since the war began. What marked them out was that so many deaths happened at once and publicly; and that Israel’s military felt obliged to acknowledge its responsibility – though without any great contrition.

Trump’s Texas Gerrymander Is Supercharging a New War on Democracy
Donald Trump’s plan to rig the 2026 midterms became crystal clear on Wednesday, as Texas Republicans introduced a new congressional redistricting map that would give their party five new seats in the US House, making it much more difficult for Democrats to retake the chamber next November.

Hiroshima Day Remembrance Procession marking the 80th Anniversary of the Nuclear Bombing of and Nagasaki
Wednesday August 6 at 4:30 pm
Art In The Atrium, 201 East Washington St, Syracuse
The annual procession honors the lives lost that terrible day, and is a reminder of the horrific consequences of nuclear weapons. Eighty years after the first atomic bombs were used in warfare, the threat of nuclear war is at a fever pitch not seen since the height of the Cold War. Today’s weapons are more powerful and widespread and the proliferation of nuclear weapons is a very real existential threat that demands our attention and action. Join us in remembering history, and in vowing not to repeat it.

Sign-up to be a part of the procession here
WCNY will also show the following documentaries to commemorate this Anniversary:

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.
