We had a nice meeting on Sunday. We heard announcements about upcoming events from the Syracuse Peace Council with activist and author, Phyllis Bennis, submitted comments on the Micron DEIS together, talked about transportation and broke out into our working groups to plan protests and future actions. There were also announcements about volunteering to register voters at the state fair with the Syracuse Onondaga County NAACP and a protest to join outside the state fair to tell Governor Hochul: No Nuclear & No Racked Gas Pipelines in NY! More details about these events and more are below.

Billboard Campaign Update
Censorship is alive and well in Central New York. We could not find a vendor who would agree to our messaging for our NYS Fair billboard campaign. We will not be silenced or tolerate censorship. We will not tone down the urgency of defeating policies that destroy our democracy.
We have a tight fundraising deadline to hire a mobile ad truck to deliver our messaging outside the New York State Fair. This increases our costs. Every donation will help us add days to our coverage. Right now, we have 3 days booked. Any additional money collected will be put in our media and outreach bucket for future projects.
No donation amount is too small. It’s time to join forces and take back OUR democracy.

Tell the EPA: Defend Safe Water!
Trump’s EPA is considering whether to roll back critical protections to keep poisonous lead and toxic PFAS forever chemicals out of our water. The diseases, developmental disorders, and internal damage caused by lead and PFAS in our water is preventable, and together we’ve worked hard to win these commonsense protections that keep our communities safe. Send a message to demand EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin maintain Biden-era protections against lead and PFAS in our water.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles or other letters; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found on our website.
If you’ve written a Letter to the Editor, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

Why you might not know that 2024 was America’s safest year since the 1960s
An overwhelming majority of Americans, 64 percent, believe that crime increased across the country in 2024, according to a Gallup survey conducted late last year. An overwhelming majority of Americans are wrong.
Moreover, the new FBI data shows that both violent crime and property crime are at their lowest level since the 1960s. In 2024, there were about 349 reported violent crimes in the United States for every 100,000 Americans. That is the lowest rate of violent crime since 1969.

Micron is close to obtaining the first permits needed to build chip plants in Clay
Micron Technology is in the final stages of obtaining the first three permits it will need to build its planned chipmaking complex in Clay. The permits would allow the company to destroy hundreds of acres of wetlands and threatened bird habitat by setting aside similar land elsewhere. Micron can’t start work until it gets these and other permits from state and federal regulators.

Anas al-Sharif, prominent Al Jazeera correspondent, among five journalists killed in Israeli airstrike on Gaza
A prominent Al Jazeera journalist who had previously been threatened by Israel has been killed along with four colleagues in an Israeli airstrike. Anas al-Sharif, who was one of Al Jazeera’s most recognisable faces in Gaza, was killed while inside a tent for journalists outside al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City on Sunday night. Seven people in total were killed in the attack, including al-Sharif, Al Jazeera correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa, according to the Qatar-based broadcaster.
The Israel Defense Force admitted the strike, claiming the reporter had “served as the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organisation and was responsible for advancing rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and IDF forces”. It claimed it had intelligence and documents found in Gaza as proof but rights advocates said he had been targeted for his frontline reporting on the Gaza war and that Israel’s claim lacked evidence.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
