Tell NYSDEC: Protect Oak Orchard Watershed!
Two years ago, the Genesee County Economic Development Center’s first attempt at constructing a STAMP Wastewater Treatment Pipeline resulted in ‘frac outs’ that spilled 500-700 gallons of hydraulic drilling fluid into Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge wetlands. Now, using a different route and scaled down plans, they’re trying again. This time, they want to send sanitary wastewater from future STAMP tenants to the Village of Oakfield Wastewater Treatment Facility, which discharges into the Oak Orchard River. Currently, the Village of Oakfield is applying for a modified permit for their Wastewater Treatment Facility. The permit adds stricter standards to the facility’s operations, with the intention of improving the water quality being discharged. These modifications are critically important to protecting public health and the ecological health of the Oak Orchard watershed. Let’s take action today: Tell NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) to protect this precious river and its watershed.

Fundraiser for Fulton family victimized by ICE
Elena, a mother of four, needs help to keep her kids safe and secure in their home.
Last January, just one day after the U.S. presidential inauguration, Elena’s husband, Julio, picked up their daughter from school in Fulton. Driving home, a car hit Julio’s, and he called local law enforcement. Police officers arrived but didn’t investigate the accident. The other driver was let go, but Julio and his daughter were forced to wait in their car for 20 minutes … for U.S. Border Patrol. He was summarily deported in March. His wife, Elena, is now left to raise their children, aged five to fifteen, on her own. She’s struggling to cover basic expenses—to pay electric bills, water bills, mortgage, and taxes. They also need to pay back the lawyer fees she incurred while desperately trying to get Julio released from an ICE detention center.

Contact Representative Mannion: Support “Block The Bombs Act” (H.R. 3565)
House Resolution 3565 known as the Block the Bombs will prevent Trump from sending the worst weapons used by Israel to kill people in Gaza.
It would be great if our congressman, John Mannion, would consider signing on since there’s so much support for it from his constituents. His PAC contributions from JStreet make him a hard sell but he won’t know how many of his constituents support Block the Bombs if we don’t call and email his office asking him to sign on.
Call (202) 225-3701 and tell his office you want him to sign onto HR 3565 and stop sending weapons to Israel to kill innocent people!

If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found on our website.
If you’ve written a Letter to the Editor, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

Micron – Submit Written or Oral Comments by September 1, 2025
Micron Technology is in the final stages of obtaining the first three permits it will need to build its planned chipmaking complex in Clay. The permits would allow the company to destroy hundreds of acres of wetlands and threatened bird habitat by setting aside similar land elsewhere. Micron can’t start work until it gets these and other permits from state and federal regulators.

No Nuclear and No Gas Pipelines! NYS Fair Demonstration for Clean Food, Air & Water
Wednesday, August 20, 10:00am – 11:30am
New York State Fairgrounds, 581 State Fair Boulevard, Syracuse
On Opening Day at the Great New York State Fair, we will gather to tell Governor Hochul that we want clean water, clean air, and healthy food, not toxic industries and corporations that pollute our communities. Celebrating New York’s farmers, food and clean water – and industries like dairy, produce, wine and beer that rely on clean water and healthy soil – has been a cornerstone of what the New York State Fair celebrates and represents. Governor Hochul has been increasingly turning away from the promise of clean renewable energy and starting to embrace the nuclear and gas industries, which would jeopardize healthy food and water in our state.
Furthermore, the Trump administration has been pushing for both new nuclear and fracked gas infrastructure in New York, including reopening applications for the Constitution and Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) pipelines, both previously rejected based on water quality impacts. We will come together on August 20th outside the fair to say: no nukes, no fracked gas, no dirty energy in our communities. Clean water, air, and food for all.

Saturday, August 23 12-1:30 pm
James Hanley Federal Building Plaza, S Clinton & Washington St, Syracuse, NY 13261
Palantir, founded by Peter Thiel, has become a favorite among U.S. government agencies involved in counterterrorism and fraud detection. They expanded into commercial markets in the mid-2010s, offering big data tools for finance, healthcare, and manufacturing. Controversial contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) drew scrutiny starting in 2017, especially regarding deportation tracking systems. Most recently the Army bundled $10 billion in contracts with them for 10 years and now Peter Thiel has decided to get back involved in politics. Join the protest to call for the defunding of Palantir and raise awareness of the dangers of this organization and Peter Thiel.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
