Economic Power – Don’t Use Round Up!
Where we choose to spend our money is one of our greatest collective strengths. Every purchase we make is an opportunity to support companies and products that align with our values and progressive ideals for human rights, labor rights, social justice, and environmental protection.
We believe in the right of all human beings to live in a safe environment with fair access to opportunity within an inclusive economy. Each week we will highlight one company or product that does NOT align with our shared values and ideals.
-
Category: Home and Garden
-
Product: Round Up
-
Why boycott? Since it hit the store shelves in 1974, “Round Up” and other toxic herbicides have sold the US consumer with the advertising that we need a yard like a green blemish-free carpet. We don’t. The herbicide industry has also sold us on the framing that “weeds” are bad. They’re not. “Weeds” are plants. Yes, some weeds can be annoyingly invasive, cause allergies, or give us itchy rashes. Yet, some “weeds” are edible or medicinal. In numerous lawsuits, “Round Up” has been linked to causing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and was ordered to pay settlements of over $14 billion dollars. “Round Up” has also been linked to increasing the bee population morality rate (Journal of Ecology).

Alternative product: Vinegar, clove and citrus oil sprays, boiling water (3 Natural Homemade Weed Killers That Actually Work)… or just let the dandelions grow!

From Indivisible: Tell Chuck Schumer: We need courage, not cowardice! You need to unify Dems and FIGHT LIKE HELL — or step down for a leader who will.
Leading up to the Schumer Surrender in March, most Democrats were ready to do whatever it took to block Trump’s far-right funding plan — but Schumer gave in to Trump’s wishes and divided his own party. That’s not what a brave leader does, and it absolutely cannot happen again.
This time, Schumer must say early, often, and loudly that Democrats WILL NOT SURRENDER ONE VOTE for a budget that funds Trump’s chaos or locks in his healthcare cuts. We need you to contact him and demand that he make that pledge publicly.
Call Schumer to tell him he cannot cave to MAGA brinkmanship again! He has to unify Dems and hold the line against far-right funding schemes.

Tell Congress: Ban Assault Weapons!
This cycle of violence is heartbreaking. Every time our country begins to heal from one avoidable mass shooting, we’re faced with another horrific act of gun violence.
There’s often a common thread in mass shootings that makes them even deadlier: the use of an assault weapon—a weapon designed to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible.
Our children have a right not to be gunned down at school. We have a right to be in public without being shot. These tragedies don’t have to be our norm.
We won’t stand for inaction from our lawmakers any longer. Send a message urging your U.S. Senators and Representative to pass an assault weapons ban now!

Proposition 50: The Election Rigging Response Act – Democracy’s Best Bet
Donald Trump and Texas Republicans are making an unprecedented power grab to steal congressional seats and rig the 2026 election before voting even begins.
Other Republican states are following suit. They want to steal enough seats to control Congress regardless of how the people vote.
If Californians don’t act now, Donald Trump will seize total power for two more years.
Republicans will spend whatever it takes to stop us so we’re counting on grassroots support to pass California Proposition 50: The Election Rigging Response Act.

Petition to Secure a Community/Food Center in Syracuse
For the last seven years, the Greater Syracuse Southside Neighborhood Association has operated a fully functioning food pantry in Syracuse, offering vital support to residents in need. Their services extend beyond food provision: they are a hub for disseminating information on community services, facilitating civic engagements, and providing health-related guidance. Their focus has been on supporting residents at or below the poverty level, who rely heavily on their resources.
Recently, they received a 90-day eviction notice due to the sale of their current building, which is beyond their financial reach as a nonprofit. This unforeseen challenge threatens their ability to continue serving the community effectively.
They have actively sought affordable building options on the south side of Syracuse to house their pantry and extend their services. However, their attempts have been hampered by unfulfilled promises from the local Home Headquarters/landbank. They need your support to pressure local authorities and organizations to assist them in securing a repairable or fixer-upper building suitable for their needs and budget.

Najee Dorsey: Poor People’s Campaign Opening Reception
Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 6 PM
ArtRage Gallery, 505 Hawley Ave, Syracuse, 13203
Set in the layered world of Najee Dorsey’s Poor People’s Campaign, is a powerful collection of work grounded in the environmental struggles of today’s impoverished communities. Blending Southern nostalgia with digitally collaged speculative futures, Dorsey’s work unveils a future shaped by environmental racism, industrial pollution, and the resilience of those who endure these atrocities. This exhibition challenges viewers to confront what’s hidden in plain sight—smokestacks on the horizon, decaying landscapes, and children at play in dystopian backdrops, unaware, just going about their lives.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
