Economic Power – Boycott ABC, Disney & HULU
Where we choose to spend our money is one of our greatest collective strengths. Every purchase we make is an opportunity to support companies and products that align with our values and progressive ideals for human rights, labor rights, social justice, and environmental protection.
We believe in the right of all human beings to live in a safe environment with fair access to opportunity within an inclusive economy. Each week we will highlight one company or product that does NOT align with our shared values and ideals.

Tell Your Democratic Senator(s) to Make Sure Schumer Doesn’t Hand Trump a Blank Check
Federal government funding runs out on September 30—and Republicans need Democratic votes to clear the filibuster and avoid a government shutdown. Democrats have a strong hand to play. They must use it to deny Donald Trump the blank check Republicans want to hand him!
But in the last big funding fight, Chuck Schumer and a handful of other Dems surrendered—rolling over and letting Trump weaponize federal funds to rob our services, militarize our cities, and terrorize our communities. That cannot happen again.
Remind your Democratic senators we cannot hand blank checks to a wannabe king—and ask them to keep publicly pressuring Schumer to FIGHT LIKE HELL!
Write to your Democratic Senators TODAY!
Republicans need to know they will OWN the Trump Shutdown if they refuse to work on a bipartisan funding agreement. They control both the House and the Senate, so it’s on them to keep the government open.
Write to your Republican Senators NOW!
One key point: This rollout will include a $45-$76 billion cut to medicare in 2026, and $491 billion cut by 2034 due to the trigger
on Trump adding to the deficit. The deficit trigger is tied to the Statutory Pay-As-You-Go Act (PAYGO), which mandates automatic spending cuts if new legislation increases the federal deficit and Congress doesn’t waive the rule.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles or other letters; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found on our website.
If you’ve written a Letter to the Editor, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

Endorse The Joint Appeal for September 26
The Campaign for Peace, Disarmament and Common Security has drafted The Joint Appeal for the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, which will be presented to the United Nations and sent to leaders, legislators and government officials around the world.
The designation of this date is not arbitrary: one of many times humanity has come perilously close to nuclear war was September 26, 1983, at the height of the Cold War. A nuclear war was narrowly averted when Colonel Stanislav Petrov, Duty Officer at a Russian nuclear early warning facility, broke protocol by not affirming to senior command an apparent incoming ballistic missile attack from the United States (later confirmed as a false alarm). Two years later, the countries at the brink jointly declared that “a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.”
Everyone is invited to endorse the Joint Appeal, either individually or as members of a group.

Can Resistance Succeed?
As summer comes to a close, Donald Trump’s attempts at outright dictatorship have become more explicit and aggressive, and his delusions of omnipotence more grandiose. A complete list would consume all of the space for this article, and more. The slide to one-man rule makes effective resistance all the more urgent, if democracy is to survive. But what sort of resistance?

The Public Service Commission Decides to Work for Trump NOT New Yorkers
Last week, New York’s Public Service Commission (PSC) approved National Grid’s long-term gas plan, which includes the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Williams Pipeline — a Trump-backed fracked gas pipeline that Gov. Kathy Hochul is working with the president to revive. The NESE Williams Pipeline has been rejected by New Yorkers three times over the last eight years, since it will raise energy costs for ratepayers, harm the environment, and explicitly violate New York’s signature climate law (CLCPA).

The Last Class
Sunday, September 28 6:00pm
Manlius Cinema, 135 East Seneca St, Manlius
The Last Class is a nuanced and deeply personal portrait of master educator Robert Reich teaching his final course and reflecting on a period of immense transformation, personally and globally. The former Secretary of Labor might be famous for his public service, best-selling books, and viral social media posts, but he always considered teaching his true calling. Now, after over 40 years and an extraordinary 40,000 students, Reich is preparing for his last class.
Over the course of the film, Reich confronts the impending finality, and his own aging, with increasing candor, introspection, and, ultimately, emotion. He displays a rawness of feeling he has never shared publicly before. Drawing on his lifetime in politics, he uses his class, “Wealth and Poverty,” to offer us all a deeper look at why inequalities of income and wealth have widened significantly since the late 1970s, and why this poses dangerous risks to our society.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
