From Everytown for Gun Safety:
The federal government has been shut down for nearly two weeks. Instead of prioritizing millions of Americans who are struggling, we’re hearing lawmakers are gearing up to pass a gun lobby-backed bill that puts everyone at risk.
A Concealed Carry Mandate would undermine state gun laws and force states to let people from other states carry hidden, loaded guns in public—even in states that wouldn’t otherwise let them.
We can’t let the gun lobby gut our gun safety laws. Make sure your voice is heard:
Text GUT to 644-33 to demand your representative oppose a federal Concealed Carry Mandate.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles or other letters; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found on our website.
If you’ve written a Letter to the Editor, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

The African American studies department needs to be valued by administrators at SU
In the aftermath of #NotAgainSU and the recent United States Supreme Court decision to overturn affirmative action, the African American Studies department at Syracuse University is facing a concerning decline. This decline doesn’t just impact academics, but represents a broader lack of support for diversity, equity, inclusion and access efforts within the university community. The current issues involving the AAS department and SU represent wider challenges to create spaces of equity in higher education.

Two New Reports Show How New York Puts Corporate Profits Over People and the Planet
In approving National Grid’s long-term plan and green-lighting the Williams NESE pipeline, New York’s utility watchdog, the Public Service Commission (PSC), has completely failed the public. From start to finish, the process for reviewing the company’s plan has been undemocratic and opaque. The PSC ignored expert analyses, refused to count and meaningfully engage with public comments, and failed to hold live public hearings.
Two new reports lay bare the brokenness of the gas system and the failure of the agency meant to regulate it:

ICE detainees in New York jails can’t talk to their lawyers
The number of ICE detainees in county jails across the state has exploded, as New York Focus reported last month. Seven jails now rent bed space to the federal agency, and jails held nearly six times as many ICE detainees in the first half of this year as they did all of last year. Attorneys say it’s often difficult to locate and communicate with ICE detainees at some jails, in part because they have inconsistent access to phones. The jail in Nassau County, on Long Island, does not allow phone access at all.

Movie Screening: “The Last Class” with Robert Reich
Saturday, October 18th, 3:55 pm
Manlius Cinema, 135 E Seneca St, Manlius, NY 13104
The Last Class is a nuanced and deeply personal portrait of master educator Robert Reich teaching his final course and reflecting on a period of immense transformation, personally and globally. It is a love letter to education. The former Secretary of Labor might be famous for his public service, best-selling books, and viral social media posts, but he always considered teaching his true calling. Over the course of the film, Reich confronts the impending finality, and his own aging, with increasing candor, introspection, and, ultimately, emotion. He displays a rawness of feeling he has never shared publicly before. Drawing on his lifetime in politics, he uses his class, “Wealth and Poverty,” to offer us all a deeper look at why inequalities of income and wealth have widened significantly since the late 1970s, and why this poses dangerous risks to our society.

Understanding Systemic Oppression, with Tim Wise
Monday, October 20, 7-8:30pm
Indivisible “Solidarity In Action” Series Virtual Event
Our society is built upon a set of unwritten rules that govern what is seen as acceptable and who is valued. Those rules are put in place by the people, communities, organizations, and more that hold power. But if the rules are (often) unwritten, how do they wield that power?
On this call, Tim Wise will walk us through how power operates in society, shapes injustices, and creates disparities and what it means to recognize those systemic power structures and analyze their impact on marginalized communities.
For some help with context, you can read Tim Wise’s Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America and/or watch The Great White Hoax: Donald Trump & the Politics of Race & Class in America (or here for free if you have a library card) before the training.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
