Sign the Petition: Prevent use of Cazenovia College by Law Enforcement
Since the closing of Cazenovia College in 2023, there have been multiple calls for community feedback and ideas, as well as public meetings led by community groups such as the Cazenovia Area Community Development Association (CACDA) and the Cazenovia Preservation Foundation (CPF). This is in stark contrast to the pending sale of Reisman and Sigety Hall: Cazenovia village leadership has failed to disclose or initiate any public conversation about the pending sale, even as it has regularly updated the community on 9Fresh’s acquisition and future development plans. No impact study has occurred of the potential effects of a county law enforcement agency in the heart of the village.

Defend New York’s Climate Laws
Here are several actions you can take to defend and improve our state’s climate:
-
Go to the Alliance for a Green Economy linktree and fill out the form for the Tell Gov. Hochul: Sign the 100-Foot Rule Repeal (A8888). The postcard urges Governor Hochul to sign the bill (which has a projected NYS annual gas customer savings of $177 million) into law. Please share the postcard link with your family and friends! We are collecting signatures through December 10 and will deliver the paper postcards and a list of online signatories to the Governor in Albany on December 11. If you would like paper postcards brought/sent to you or picked up, please email Andra at andra@agreeny.org.
-
Stand up and be vocal in support of NY’s climate laws; Governor Hochul and her administration are definitely not immune to pressure from the Federal administration. We hope that 100s of people from across the state will join us on December 11 when we travel to Albany to ask that Governor Hochul not delay the All-Electric Buildings Act and sign the 100-Foot Rule Repeal.

Phone Bank for Aftyn Behn
Aftyn Behn, a social worker, state House Representative, and former Indivisible organizer, is running in a special election on December 2nd to flip Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District. Aftyn is a smart, clear-eyed, young leader and she’s got an incredible grassroots campaign that’s energizing disaffected voters across the district. She’s running to feed kids, fix roads, and fund hospitals — Aftyn is exactly the type of fighter TN-07 deserves and a voice we desperately need in Congress.
This won’t be an easy race to win — Trump won the district by 22 points in 2024 — but we’ve seen districts swing by that margin just last week and Aftyn has won challenging races before.

Where we choose to spend our money is one of our greatest collective strengths. Every purchase we make is an opportunity to support companies and products that align with our values and progressive ideals for human rights, labor rights, social justice, and environmental protection.
We believe in the right of all human beings to live in a safe environment with fair access to opportunity within an inclusive economy. Each week we will highlight one company or product that does NOT align with our shared values and ideals.

If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:

When ICE came for Jeremy, Syracuse’s underground railroad helped him escape the country
Friends, activists, politicians and a network of total strangers collaborated to keep one Syracuse husband from the clutches of an increasingly heartless federal government. They used misdirection the way a smuggler might. There were decoy cars. A chain of human shields. Movement under darkness. And finally, sympathetic Canadians. They found refuge after hours of frantic planning.

“The Librarians”
Tuesday, November 18th, 7:00pm
Manlius Cinema, 135 East Seneca St, Manlius, NY
In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQia+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of White Christian Nationalism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.

Nottingham High School, 3100 E. Genesee St, Syracuse
Syracuse Peace Council’s 53rd annual Plowshares Craftsfair & Peace Festival is Dec 6 and 7. Plowshares, SPC’s largest fundraiser of the year, is a labor of love that comes together thanks to the help of many volunteers.
Plowshares is not only for the community, but it is created by the community. The Plowshares committee is active all year; the SPC staff and other volunteers step up from October on. Everyone is needed and can play a part. Please join in the fun of creating Plowshares – just fill out the google form or email spc@peacecouncil.net.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
