Organization Spotlight: Climate Change Awareness and Action
A core intention of CNY Solidarity Coalition is to bring together and support organizations already out there helping directly affected communities in the Central New York area. Each week we’ll spotlight one of the over 100 organizations in our Directory; there’s a LOT going on!
Climate Change Awareness and Action (CCAA) is excited to be growing their community in their mission to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, through individual and community education and action while supporting fair and just public policies and legislation.

Tell Congress: Oppose the Federal Concealed Carry Mandate
New York has worked hard to pass gun laws that will keep our residents safe. Since we flipped the State Senate in 2018 (thanks to many of you!), New York has passed 47 different bills, resulting in our state having one of the lowest rates of gun violence in the country.
HOWEVER, Republicans in Congress are working to pass a bill called the Constitutional Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act (HR38), a dangerous bill designed to gut our gun laws and allow anyone to carry hidden loaded guns in public.
If passed, this bill would actually override our laws here in New York about who can carry a gun in public and where — Allowing people with dangerous histories, like those convicted of violent crimes, to bring hidden guns almost anywhere, including into our parks, bars and even private daycares.
Everyone needs to contact their Representative TODAY to stop this bill!

Defend New York’s Climate Laws
Here are several actions you can take to defend and improve our state’s climate:
-
Tell Gov. Hochul: Sign the 100-Foot Rule Repeal (A8888). The postcard urges Governor Hochul to sign the bill (which has a projected NYS annual gas customer savings of $177 million) into law. Please share the postcard link with your family and friends! We are collecting signatures through December 10 and will deliver the paper postcards and a list of online signatories to the Governor in Albany on December 11. If you would like paper postcards brought/sent to you or picked up, please email Andra at andra@agreeny.org.
-
Stand up and be vocal in support of NY’s climate laws; Governor Hochul and her administration are definitely not immune to pressure from the Federal administration. We hope that 100s of people from across the state will join AGREE on December 11 when we travel to Albany to ask that Governor Hochul not delay the All-Electric Buildings Act and sign the 100-Foot Rule Repeal.

Phone Bank for Aftyn Behn
Aftyn Behn, a social worker, state House Representative, and former Indivisible organizer, is running in a special election on December 2nd to flip Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District. This won’t be an easy race to win — Trump won the district by 22 points in 2024 — but we’ve seen districts swing by that margin just last week and Aftyn has won challenging races before.

CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles or other letters; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:

55th Annual Plowshares Craftsfair and Peace Festival Dec 6-7
Sat. Dec 6th: 10 to 5 pm, Sun. Dec 7th: 10:30 to 4:30 pm
Nottingham High School, 3100 E. Genesee St, Syracuse
Syracuse Peace Council’s 53rd annual Plowshares Craftsfair & Peace Festival is Dec 6 and 7. Plowshares is an opportunity to step into the kind of world we’re working so hard to create: a place of justice, of peace, of compassion, of environmental sustainability. Plowshares, SPC’s largest fundraiser of the year, is a labor of love that comes together thanks to the help of many volunteers.
Plowshares is not only for the community, but it is created by the community. The Plowshares committee is active all year; the SPC staff and other volunteers step up from October on. Everyone is needed and can play a part. Please join in the fun of creating Plowshares – just fill out the google form or email spc@peacecouncil.net.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.
