CNY Solidarity Coalition deplores ICE brutality, most recently evidenced in the needless killing of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis. We encourage community members to support local front line organizations working toward justice for immigrants: the Workers’ Center of CNY, and the Syracuse Immigrant and Refugee Defense Network (SIRDN).
Express your sorrow, outrage, and solidarity by joining these actions:
Emergency Action protest: Clinton Square, Syracuse, January 8, 4 pm
Indivisible Rapid Response Call: January 8, 8 pm
Weekly Pop-up Protest: January 10, 11-12, Solar St & Hiawatha Blvd

A core intention of CNY Solidarity Coalition is to bring together and support organizations already out there helping directly affected communities in the Central New York area. Each week we’ll spotlight one of the over 100 organizations in our Directory; there’s a LOT going on!
Syracuse Immigrant and Refugee Defense Network
The Syracuse Immigrant and Refugee Defense Network (SIRDN) works for immigration justice in Central New York and beyond through organizing, advocacy, and solidarity support for directly affected individuals and their families. We center the leadership of staff and members of the Workers’ Center of Central New York and strive to show up as allies and accomplices in the fight for human dignity for all people regardless of their citizenship status. Lately, that includes providing community trainings such as Know Your Rights and ICE Watch, tracking/confirming reports of ICE activity, organizing protests/rallies, and providing support for folks who are detained and their families, along with other activities.

January Banned Book Club: The Mermaid, The Witch, & The Sea
Wednesday, January 14 2026, 7:30-8:30 pm
Red, Wine & Blue Zoom event
Author Maggie Tokuda-Hall will join RWB to discuss her award-winning novel, The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea. This is a fantasy novel about a pirate named Flora (disguised as Florian) and a highborn lady, Evelyn, who fall in love aboard a ship where the crew plans to sell the passengers into slavery. The story explores themes of colonialism, gender identity, and survival. The book has been challenged (and in some cases removed) from school and library collections primarily because it contains graphic violence, sexual themes, and LGBTQ+ content.

Reclaiming Our Collective Inheritance: A Palestinian Diaspora Collection
Now through January 17, 2026
Wednesdays-Fridays 2-6pm; Saturdays 12-4pm
505 Hawley Avenue, Syracuse, NY 13203
The Palestinian Thobe is more than an embroidered garment—it is a living archive. For Palestinians in the diaspora, these intricately stitched dresses are tangible connections to a homeland many have never seen, yet fiercely carry within them. Each motif tells a story—of identity, ancestral village, and unbroken resilience. Tragically, many Thobes have been lost to time, war, and dispossession—from heirloom dresses smuggled out of Palestine to stolen Thobes rediscovered in antique markets, their narratives preserved only in the whispers of fading thread.

Film: “Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round”
Sunday, January 18, 7:00 pm
Monday, January 19, 6:45 pm
Manlius Cinema, 135 E. Seneca St, Manlius NY
When five Howard University students sat on a segregated Maryland carousel in 1960, the arrests made headlines. When the largely Jewish community near Glen Echo Amusement Park joined the Black students in picketing, the first organized interracial civil rights protest in US history was born. Filmmaker Ilana Trachtman will be live and in person with us for a post-show Q&A.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.
