Club America – Is it Civics Education or Something Else? Many people are commenting these days on the need for greater civic education in our high schools. A review of research on this does confirm it sorely lacking. As for NY state, the Seal of Civic Readiness is only OPTIONAL and not offered in every school.
Organizations like TurningPointUSA (TPUSA ) have decided to fill that void by establishing Club Americas in high schools nationwide; several of our area high schools already have such clubs. But is the civic education being offered in these clubs filling the real need? It may not be. TPUSA values, principles and beliefs are deeply embedded in its many programs.
For example, they describe their TurningPoint Education program as “dedicated to reclaiming the education of our children, reviving virtuous education focused on truth, goodness and beauty, and restoring God as the founder of education.” They describe their Turning Point Academy and its “5C Seeding Schools” as “…committed to advancing all types of Christian conservative values education”.
If this is not your idea of civics education it’s important for your school administrators and school boards, who might be reviewing a Club America application right now, to hear from you. Sign up here to find out how to start.

A core intention of CNY Solidarity Coalition is to bring together and support organizations already out there helping directly affected communities in the Central New York area. Each week we’ll spotlight one of the over 100 organizations in our Directory; there’s a LOT going on!
Alliance for a Green Economy (AGREE)
AGREE is a New York-based organization advocating for a transition to a carbon-free and nuclear-free energy system, promoting renewable energy, energy efficiency, and public education on sustainable alternatives.
We are so honored that you worked with us in 2025 on the NY HEAT Act, of which one pillar (the repeal of the 100-ft rule) was signed into law in December 2025! We hope you will continue to fight alongside us for this year’s Renewable Heat Now priorities including energy affordability, energy efficiency, solar energy, weatherization funding, and a crucial amendment to public service law (amending the obligation to serve gas to the obligation to provide heat). Here are several ways to support these priorities:
- Join us for the next Renewable Heat Now virtual Power Hour at 7pm on Thursday, February 12 for updates about ongoing work.
- Join RHN and allies in Albany on Wednesday, March 4 to connect with legislators about crucial affordability proposals for the budget. Even one or 2 people from your region can help make a difference! Email andra@agreeny.org to find out more information.
- Join RHN and allies for a March 25 mobilization to Albany in the final push for funding our priorities in the budget.

Rally to TAX THE RICH in Albany Wednesday, February 25, 08:00 AM – 05:00 PM Albany, NY Join the NY Working Families Party contingent in Albany on February 25th for a massive mobilization to tax the rich to make NY affordable!
Working New Yorkers are being stretched to the breaking point while billionaires get even richer. Rent keeps rising. Childcare costs more than college. Buses are slow and unreliable. Groceries and utilities eat up paychecks.
That’s why, together with a coalition of partners, we’re bringing thousands of New Yorkers to Albany for a march and rally to demand a New York we can actually afford. We’re calling on state leaders to tax the rich and invest in the public goods working families need and deserve, including universal childcare, permanently affordable housing, and fast and free buses. Register and select that you are outside NYC and need a ride, they will look at transportation options if we can get enough to attend!
