Ensuring Access to Health Care in NY
In New York, many families don’t get the physical and mental health treatment they need, even when their health plan promises to cover the services.
Inconsistent and opaque insurance rules lead to delays, denials, and treatment being cut short. This has significant consequences for New York families, including caregiver stress, financial instability, worsened conditions and health crises.
Inseparable, a mental health advocacy organization, is hard at work to ensure families are given the health coverage they deserve from their insurance companies — and state leaders in New York are taking up our priority bill! State Senator Fernandez and Assemblymember Hunter have introduced a bill (S.5241/A.6648) to close insurance company loopholes and ensure patients get the health care they’ve been promised.
Add your name to show your support for S.5241/A.6648, which will ensure health plans cover the physical and mental health care New Yorkers need.

From Indivisible. Call Gillibrand: Shame for Supporting Trump’s Crypto Scams!
Last night, 16 Senate Democrats, including Sen. Gillibrand, voted with Republicans to advance a crypto-friendly bill that will enable Trump’s corruption. Instead of standing up to Trump, these 16 Democrats decided they’d rather do a big favor for the crypto industry and legitimize an avenue for Trump to collect bribes.
It’s okay to disagree about the best ways to expand healthcare coverage or make housing more affordable. But it shouldn’t be hard to get every Democrat to oppose helping Trump accept bribes from billionaires and foreign governments.
A vote like this feeds cynicism about the Democratic Party not being real and not being about what they purportedly stand for.

Tell Assembly Members: Pass the NY HEAT Act!
Assemblymembers should be hearing from constituents that NY HEAT must pass this session because continuing to pour money into an inefficient and increasingly expensive gas system holds New York in the past when we could instead update NY’s outdated pro-gas laws to unlock billions of dollars in existing funding for modern, energy-efficient electric equipment. Both AM Stirpe and AM Hunter are co-sponsors of the NY HEAT Act, and you can thank them for that while also asking them to speak up for the bill in Conference and fight to pass it this session. AM Magnarelli is not a co-sponsor and therefore needs to hear your support for NY HEAT to pass. All Majority Party (Democrat) AMs should get letters. Here is a link to the bill We think that at this stage of the legislative session, emails and especially paper letters will get more attention than the prewritten click-and-send kind. AM Bronson (Rochester area) wrote an excellent Op-Ed supporting passage of the NY HEAT Act. Here is a detailed FAQ about NY HEAT.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found here.
If you’ve written a letter, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

DHS asks for 20,000 National Guard troops for immigration roundups, Pentagon reviewing request
The Department of Homeland Security has asked for 20,000 National Guard troops to assist with immigration roundups across the country, and the Pentagon is reviewing the unusual request, a U.S. official confirmed to The Associated Press. DHS asked for the troops to help carry out President Donald Trump’s “mandate from the American people to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens,” department spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said. She said DHS will ”use every tool and resource available” to do so because the “safety of American citizens comes first.”
Unlike the troops deployed at the southern border, these National Guard units would come from the states and be used to assist in deportation operations in the interior of the country.

Opinion: Continued police brutality must be met with active demands for reform
That means writing to local and state officials and demanding transparency from local police departments. Push for funding that supports mental health, housing and education resources instead of more weapons and armor for cops.
We must start and sign petitions that call for real reform, whether that’s removing school resource officers, pushing for body camera access or fighting for civilian review boards with real power.
It’s time to correct the rhetoric, not just the law.

Syracuse.com has obtained the bulk of Micron’s report, which the county and other public agencies have refused to release since December.
“…the report says: The influx of thousands of construction workers and new residents would squeeze an already tight housing market, making it even harder to find an affordable place to live. Traffic would overwhelm local roads unless expensive improvements are made, including widening major roads and building two new highway interchanges. Local governments would collect $500 million more per year, but property taxes could still rise as the demand for services does, Micron’s analysis says.”

State officials plan hotline, safety measures for Syracuse residents affected by I-81 construction
Syracuse residents impacted by the re-imagining of the Interstate-81 viaduct this June will be able to call medical experts to learn best practices on how to deal with the fallout of construction. That includes the effects of air pollution and lead paint and dust contamination.
State Department of Transportation officials and community advocates announced a hotline, among other measures meant to maintain the health of nearby residents, at a Wednesday press conference at the Dunbar Center.

‘Revisionist History’: Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith Insists ‘The Three-Fifths Compromise Was A Good Thing’
Indiana’s Christian nationalist Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith stirred up controversy last month when he posted a video on social media defending the Constitution’s infamous “three-fifths clause”—a compromise made by the framers that gave southern states greater power by counting three-fifths of each enslaved person when determining representation in Congress—as a “great move” that made sure “that slavery would be eradicated in our nation.”
Beckwith’s interpretation of the compromise was entirely wrong because instead of ensuring that “slavery would be eradicated,” it actually ensured its survival for nearly another century.

‘Civilized People Do Not Starve Children to Death’: Sanders Rips US-Backed Israel’s 68-Day Gaza Aid Blockade
U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) not only highlighted those conditions in a speech on the Senate floor Thursday but also called out the fact that the worsening humanitarian crisis “gets very little discussion here in the nation’s capital or in the halls of Congress,” even though Israel has spent the past 19 months destroying Gaza with armed and diplomatic support from the United States.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
