“Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self- defense against a homicidal maniac…We have now sunk to a depth at which restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. If liberty means anything at all, it means the right to tell people what they do not want to hear. In times of universal deceit, telling the truth will be a revolutionary act.” – George Orwell

Call Gillibrand and Demand a Retraction: Democratic Senator Gillibrand Goes on Islamophobic Rant Against Mamdani
The Democrat’s rant has sparked calls for her to resign over her bigoted language.
In an appearance on WYNC’s “Brian Lehrer Show,” the senator repeated numerous lies about Mamdani, echoing oft-repeated bigoted statements made about Palestinians and the pro-Palestine movement.

If the Big Beautiful Billionaire Bonanza Bill is still in the Senate
This budget would enact more than $1 trillion in cuts to vital public programs their own constituents depend on, including Medicaid, food assistance, and education, to help fund their massive tax giveaway for the ultra-wealthy and big corporations.
Join MoveOn, Working Families Power, Indivisible, Community Change Action, and Public Citizen at this link for a national phone bank to Medicaid recipients urging them to call their Senators ahead of the upcoming budget vote to stop the cuts and save Medicaid!

Call Governor Hochul to Sign the Repeal of the “100ft Rule”!
The legislature just passed a bill A.8888/S.8417, a bill that ends the 100 foot gas line extension subsidy.
This law will save New Yorkers at least $200 million a year and will encourage the adoption of clean energy technologies in homes. Governor Hochul has supported this provision in the past. We need this bill signed into law immediately. Watch the Renewable Heat Now 2025 Legislative Session Debrief on YouTube.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found on our website.
If you’ve written a Letter to the Editor, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

Mamdani’s victory marks the rise of a new American Left
A new working-class immigrant politics, rooted in organizing, solidarity, and a sharp critique of inequality, is taking hold within the Democratic Party. Mamdani’s campaign – focused on rent freezes, universal childcare, public transit, and green infrastructure – galvanized multiracial working-class coalitions across the city. His win is a repudiation of corporate influence and local corruption, and a powerful endorsement of politics shaped by immigrants with deep ties to global struggles for justice.

SustainCNY to McMahon: We need more time to comment on Micron report
Further, we must not only consider immediate and long-term threats to public and environmental health from factories of this magnitude and in this industry, but the impacts on every public service including housing, first responders, health care and transportation — not to mention fiscal and economic outcomes of Micron’s influence. Our communities want to understand and give effectual input on these possibilities and how Micron will manage each of the impacts. What are the risks? What are the opportunities?
The sheer variety of issues alone leads us to know that 45 days is inadequate.

NY AG begins civil rights probe of immigration enforcement by the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office
The New York attorney general has begun a civil rights investigation of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office’s immigration enforcement. The AG’s interest follows a Syracuse.com | The Post-Standard investigation April 17 that revealed aggressive moves by the sheriff’s office, working with federal immigration authorities, that critics said amounted to racial profiling. Lawyers and advocates criticized deputies for stopping Hispanic drivers for minor traffic violations and handing them over to Border Patrol agents.

The Supreme Court’s Ruling on Birthright Citizenship Is a Trump Power Grab
In one of the most anticipated decisions of this Supreme Court term, the justices today granted President Donald Trump’s emergency applications to stay a series of district court orders that had blocked his efforts to restrict birthright citizenship and upend who gets to be an American citizen.

Free America Study Session: Freedom and Abolition
Tuesday, July 1 at 8:00pm on Zoom
Policing, incarceration, surveillance—they’re sold to us as “justice.” But we know the truth: They are tools of control. And they were never meant to keep us safe. This conversation will ground us in the power of abolition—not just as resistance, but as a blueprint for a new world.
If you’ve ever wondered: What do we build in place of prisons? What does real safety look like? How do we make abolition a practice, not just a slogan? This space is for you. Come ready to learn, connect, and grow. Let’s study. Let’s resist. Let’s free America.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.
