Economic Power – Boycott Walmart!
Where we choose to spend our money is one of our greatest collective strengths. Every purchase we make is an opportunity to support companies and products that align with our values and progressive ideals for human rights, labor rights, social justice, and environmental protection.
We believe in the right of all human beings to live in a safe environment with fair access to opportunity within an inclusive economy. Each week we will highlight one company or product that does NOT align with our shared values and ideals.
This week’s company: Walmart
Why boycott? The Walton family has a combined net worth of $267 billion dollars, yet does not pay a living wage, forcing employees (often who are working full-time hours) to seek SNAP and Medicaid benefits, which have been cut by the Big Ugly Bill, contributing to expanding the wealth gap. Additionally, Walmart suppresses efforts for employees to unionize and is complicit with ICE.
Alternative: Costco has contributed 98% to blue candidates over the last three election cycles, including Vice President Harris (Goods Unite Us). If one has no other choice to shop at Walmart, as a conscious consumer, choose ethical and environmentally-friendly products.

Please volunteer to represent CNY Solidarity at the NAACP’s voter registration drive at the NY State Fair
Help build our alliances with the NAACP and our community. Although this is a non partisan voter registration event, and will involve registering voters of all political parties, we will be allowed to hand out our CNY Solidarity flyers to interested parties, and answer questions. This is a great opportunity for us to connect with our local NAACP chapter and strengthen our community ties. All materials will be ready on site, including our flyers. Just show up at your registered time. Civil responsibility starts at the voting booth!
Volunteers will receive FREE FAIR ADMISSION AND PARKING PASSES by contacting Linda Brown Robinson: 315-439-3680.

The Election Rigging Response Act – Democracy’s Best Bet
Donald Trump and Texas Republicans are making an unprecedented power grab to steal congressional seats and rig the 2026 election before voting even begins.
Other Republican states are following suit. They want to steal enough seats to control Congress regardless of how the people vote.
If Californians don’t act now, Donald Trump will seize total power for two more years.
Republicans will spend whatever it takes to stop us so we’re counting on grassroots support to pass the Election Rigging Response Act.

Being an Immigration Activist: Opportunities in CNY
The Workers’ Center of CNY grew out of a nation-wide movement of innovative workers’ centers and formally incorporated in 2013. It is based in Syracuse, NY and organizes with low-wage predominantly immigrant workers throughout Central NY and into the North Country. Through community organizing, the Workers’ Center facilitates worker empowerment and leadership development through trainings related to workers’ rights and occupational health and safety, orchestrates campaigns to combat wage theft and to promote employer compliance with the law, and engages in organizing and coalition-building to push for policies that will increase wages and workplace standards and promote human rights.
There are two things of value for people to sign up for:
- Sign up for the Workers Center of CNY newsletter, at the bottom of their website home page
- Sign up for information about events/meetings/actions/trainings, associated with the Syracuse Immigrant and Refugee Defense Network (SIRDN). There will also be forwards of relevant news information. Send email to sirdn315@gmail.com

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles or other letters; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found on our website.
If you’ve written a Letter to the Editor, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

Micron – Submit Written or Oral Comments by September 1, 2025
Micron Technology is in the final stages of obtaining the first three permits it will need to build its planned chipmaking complex in Clay. The permits would allow the company to destroy hundreds of acres of wetlands and threatened bird habitat by setting aside similar land elsewhere. Micron can’t start work until it gets these and other permits from state and federal regulators.

What’s Project Esther?
Project Esther’s strategy of weaponizing fear to control a social movement is not just about Palestine. It’s a blueprint for how to crack down on other movements — civil liberties, immigrant rights, queer and trans rights, racial justice, workers’ rights, and more. This means that — for all of us — defending the right to speak out for Palestine is central to defending the rights and freedoms of all people in the U.S.

Surveillance Company Flock Now Using AI to Report Us to Police if it Thinks Our Movement Patterns Are “Suspicious”
The police surveillance company Flock has built an enormous nationwide license plate tracking system, which streams records of Americans’ comings and goings into a private national database that it makes available to police officers around the country. The system allows police to search the nationwide movement records of any vehicle that comes to their attention. That’s bad enough on its own, but the company is also now apparently analyzing our driving patterns to determine if we’re “suspicious.” That means if your police start using Flock, they could target you just because some algorithm has decided your movement patterns suggest criminality.

The Bias Inside Us organized by Smithsonian
The Bias Inside Us is a community engagement project featuring a Smithsonian traveling exhibition, the centerpiece for local programs and activities that raise awareness about the science and history of bias and what people can do about it. On this website, you’ll find resources for teachers, communities and individuals to learn more about implicit bias.
The project is grounded in research and teaches us that bias is inside everyone. It is part of being human. Visit Dewitt & Jamesville library in August to see posters from the Smithsonian’s traveling exhibition.

Najee Dorsey: Poor People’s Campaign Opening Reception
Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 6 PM
ArtRage Gallery, 505 Hawley Ave, Syracuse, 13203
Set in the layered world of Najee Dorsey’s Poor People’s Campaign, is a powerful collection of work grounded in the environmental struggles of today’s impoverished communities. Blending Southern nostalgia with digitally collaged speculative futures, Dorsey’s work unveils a future shaped by environmental racism, industrial pollution, and the resilience of those who endure these atrocities. This exhibition challenges viewers to confront what’s hidden in plain sight—smokestacks on the horizon, decaying landscapes, and children at play in dystopian backdrops, unaware, just going about their lives.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.
