Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles or other letters; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found on our website.
If you’ve written a Letter to the Editor, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

A U.S. immigration case allowed part of the story. Then jurors explored the shadows of doubt
A second jury was unable to decide this week whether Doris Aleman-Bonilla should be convicted of an immigration-related felony brought by the U.S. government in a Syracuse court. Border Patrol agents arrested Aleman-Bonilla, of Honduras, in April after an Oswego County sheriff’s deputy pulled over her car near Fulton. She was driving four other people to work at an apple-packing plant. A Border Patrol agent was in the sheriff’s car.

Forbes ranks #Micron as top company for tech workers. But is that true?
“CHIPS Communities United, a D.C.-based collective of unions in the semiconductor industry, called Micron’s contract with the state to build the plants a vague commitment to any promises of workers’ rights.”

The state spent millions to resettle asylum seekers. ICE is arresting them.

Democratic Governors Can Arrest ICE Agents. What Are They Waiting For?
“Federal agents are committing state felonies every day. Breaking and entering. Kidnapping. Assault. When they kick down doors without judicial warrants, when they detain citizens without probable cause, when they point guns at children, these are crimes under state law. And Democratic governors have the power to prosecute those crimes.
They just need to understand an absolutely essential point.
Winning isn’t the point. Fighting is.”

Tariffs, ‘conversion therapy’ and mail ballots: key US Supreme Court cases to watch this term
Donald Trump’s ability to shape the commanding heights of US political life will be at stake when the court assembles for its new term on 6 October.
The busy schedule facing the nine justices will acquire added weight due to the momentous significance of some of the issues they have agreed to consider.
Political representation for ethnic minorities, the legitimacy of mail-in ballots, whether “conversion therapy” for transgender people can be banned, the legality of tariffs, and the president’s power to fire a board member of the Federal Reserve – all things on which Donald Trump has voiced strong views – will all face legal scrutiny and judgment in the coming weeks and months.

Nonviolent Direct Action Training
Sunday, October 12, 3-6pm
Zoom Event
We are living in a time that most of us never imagined. A time when the democratic state, flawed as it is, is coming apart. Those responsible are working to impose a new order rooted in white, male, Christian supremacy. To secure this dystopian order, state violence and the silencing of dissent is on the rise, threatening any opposition to the fascist regime. The Fellowship of Reconciliation invites you to join us for a 2-part gathering to discuss theoretical and practical applications of nonviolent direct action as the best way to respond to authoritarianism and the repressive use of state power. The gatherings are free to all friends and allies. Our amazing trainers are Lisa Fithian with the Alliance of Community Trainers (ACT) and Mary Link, NVDA Trainer Western MASS Team.

Movie Screening: “The Last Class” with Robert Reich
Saturday, October 18th, 3:55 pm
Manlius Cinema, 135 E Seneca St, Manlius, NY 13104
The Last Class is a nuanced and deeply personal portrait of master educator Robert Reich teaching his final course and reflecting on a period of immense transformation, personally and globally. It is a love letter to education. The former Secretary of Labor might be famous for his public service, best-selling books, and viral social media posts, but he always considered teaching his true calling. Over the course of the film, Reich confronts the impending finality, and his own aging, with increasing candor, introspection, and, ultimately, emotion. He displays a rawness of feeling he has never shared publicly before. Drawing on his lifetime in politics, he uses his class, “Wealth and Poverty,” to offer us all a deeper look at why inequalities of income and wealth have widened significantly since the late 1970s, and why this poses dangerous risks to our society.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
