Economic Power Special – Fundraiser to Benefit Food Bank of CNY
Imagine suddenly facing the choice of buying food, paying the rent or keeping the heat on. One in seven households in NY are facing this financial cliff.
As of November 1, federal government funding for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) has been withheld or severely delayed, creating uncertainty for many of our neighbors who are living with food insecurity.
By the time you read this, the courts may have forced the Department of Agriculture to release the emergency funding for SNAP. But as we know, this fund was not adequate for even one full month of funding nationwide, and the urgent need for food support will remain.
We’re reaching out to all CNY Solidarity Coalition members, supporters, allies and friends who are lucky enough to not be experiencing food insecurity. Whatever your level of relative abundance, please dig deep and give generously so that we can provide critical funding to the Food Bank of CNY. 100% of funds raised through this effort will go to the Food Bank of CNY.

We need you to contact your federal representatives now. Sign Feeding New York State’s petition, telling them you will not accept your neighbors going hungry. Urge them to release SNAP contingency funds and transfer additional funds to fully cover November benefits.

Syracuse DSA Crowdfunded Food Aid Appeal
This initiative is specifically geared towards doing something outside of the Food Pantry/Food Bank system. The governor has put $41M worth of extra funding into work to help with this SNAP funding crisis. The money will likely go to food pantries and other already governmentally established aid efforts which are only open certain hours and certain days and only provide specific nutrition (as per Food Bank/USDA guidelines) without taking special dietary needs into consideration. The DSA initiative approach is to get money directly into the hands of people who may have nutritional needs that cannot be met by the Food Bank or may not have access to the Food Bank resources. It’s complementary to the CNY Solidarity Coalition effort.

Volunteer for the 55th Annual Plowshares Craftsfair and Peace Festival
Syracuse Peace Council’s 53rd annual Plowshares Craftsfair & Peace Festival is Dec 6 and 7. Plowshares is an opportunity to step into the kind of world we’re working so hard to create: a place of justice, of peace, of compassion, of environmental sustainability. Plowshares, SPC’s largest fundraiser of the year, is a labor of love that comes together thanks to the help of many volunteers.
Plowshares is not only for the community, but it is created by the community. The Plowshares committee is active all year; the SPC staff and other volunteers step up from October on. Everyone is needed and can play a part.
Please join in the fun of creating Plowshares – just fill out the google form or email spc@peacecouncil.net.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles or other letters; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found here.

Hunger is a local problem
Onondaga County is sitting on a $100 million surplus while families across Syracuse and the county struggle to put food on the table after deep cuts to SNAP (food stamp) benefits. The County Legislature should immediately pass an emergency resolution to use the surplus to feed these residents. I urge residents, nonprofits, civic groups, and clergy to contact their county legislators and the County
If your county legislator refuses to act, remember—you can vote for change this Tuesday. No one in Onondaga County should go hungry while our government hoards a surplus of your tax dollars.

Who knows when ICE comes to town?
Detainees often have to call their families to tell them they were arrested by ICE, which can take weeks. ICE’s arrests don’t respond to the protocols or accountability mechanisms of other law enforcement agencies.

Amazon strategised about keeping its datacentres’ full water use secret, leaked document shows
Amazon strategised about keeping the public in the dark over the true extent of its datacentres’ water use, a leaked internal document reveals.
The biggest owner of datacentres in the world, Amazon dwarfs competitors Microsoft and Google and is planning a huge increase in capacity as part of a push into artificial intelligence. The Seattle firm operates hundreds of active facilities, with many more in development despite concerns over how much water is being used to cool their vast arrays of circuitry.

“The Librarians”
Sunday, November 16th, 1:00pm
Manlius Cinema, 135 East Seneca St, Manlius, NY
In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQia+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of White Christian Nationalism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.

Monday, November 17th, 10-11:30am
Plymouth Congregational Church, 232 E Onondaga St, Syracuse, NY 13202

It also stems from discussions about building resilient communities held during the first October 1 convening. The November 17 convening will provide a space to learn from experts, generate solutions, and form practical partnerships among participants.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
