Action Alerts – Week of July 23rd

CNY Solidarity members and supporters:
Please find below the weekly ACTION ALERTS from Indivisible NY24 and our legislative action teams. The New York State primary election is 52 days away, and the general election is 106 days away. Please mark your calendars (Sept. 13 and Nov. 6), confirm your voter registration, and make sure your friends and family are all registered too.

Today (July 23)

One letter-writing action today and one meeting tonight

Demand congressional support for election security

Today (or any day this week), please write a letter to the editor calling out Rep. Katko (and every single House Republican) for voting against increased funding for election security last week. Indivisible’s guide to writing letters to the editor is here, our list of local outlets is here.

We know with increasing certainty every day that Russia is attempting to manipulate the midterm election results. State boards of elections are underfunded, and Congress is sitting on its hands. #WheresKatko? In addition to voting against increased funding last week, Katko has refused to co-sponsor the bipartisan PAPER Act (HR 3751), which would direct the Election Assistance Commission to develop best practices for State to protect the integrity of federal elections and would provide election technology improvement grants to states.

SPAARC Meeting

The Syracuse Police Accountability and Reform Coalition meets at 5pm at 499 S. Warren St. in Syracuse.

Tuesday (July 24)

Demand campaign finance transparency now

Last week, the Trump administration’s Treasury Department ruled that “dark money” groups no longer need to disclose their donors’ names or addresses in their tax filings. Again #KatkoRemainsSilent. Today, please call his office and/or draft a letter to the editor, demanding that the support the DISCLOSE Act (HR 6239), which would tighten rather than weaken existing disclosure requirements for independent campaign expenditures by corporate PACs and other entities. The bill has 165 co-sponsors, including zero Republicans. Where is Mr. Bipartisan Moderate when it counts? Katko’s numbers are 315-423-5657 (Syracuse), 315-253-4068 (Auburn), or 202-225-3701 (DC), and again, our list of local outlets for letters to the editor is here.

Wednesday (July 25)

Support Reproductive Rights

From our state legislative action team: In January 2017, Governor Cuomo proposed a constitutional amendment codifying Roe V. Wade into the New York State Constitution. He continues to rhetorically support updating New York State’s laws that protect a woman’s right to choose. All these speeches have led to no actual legislation. Today, please call Governor Cuomo’s office (518) 474-8390 to demand to know what he is actually doing to protect a woman’s right to choose. Please also email Cynthia Nixon’s campaign <https://cynthiafornewyork.com/> , contact Stephanie Miner’s campaign via Facebook <@StephanieAMiner>, and email Marc Molinaro’s campaign Info@MolinaroforNY.com with the same question.
