Wednesday (Dec 9)

Contact County Legislators or Write to Paper About Partisan Salary Cuts

The Republican legislature decided last week to reduce the salaries of the election commissioners on a party line vote. It also created an annual salary review targeting them. Threatening to cut salaries is a classic technique for interfering with officials’ independence. Writer your county legislators or the newspaper about this. Contact information for legislators is here.

Thursday (Dec 10)

Student Debt

Contact Joe Biden and urge him to cancel student debt. It’s the one piece of fiscal stimulus he can enact unilaterally. More information here. Email Biden at https://bidenpresident.com/Contact

Friday (Dec 11)

Restore Social Services Funding

In a rare party line budget vote, the Republican county legislators rammed through a drastic set of cuts, including cuts to the departments of social services and children and family services. The county refused to spend $1.4 million from an untapped $77 million rainy day fund to partially restore those services during the ongoing pandemic as requested by Democratic legislatures. Contact your legislator or write the newspaper to object. Legislators’ contact information is here

You’re receiving this email because you’re subscribed to the CNY Solidarity Coalition announcements list. This is a low-volume list (typically no more than 4-6 messages per week), which now has more than 2,000 subscribers. We also maintain higher-volume listservs as venues for discussion of general Coalition-wide issues (discussion-cnysolidarity), key state and local action team organizing priorities (stateleg-cnysolidarity), and key Indivisible NY24 organizing priorities (IndivisibleNY24). The latter list includes more frequent action alerts and information about local electoral campaigns supported by Indivisible. If you’d like to be added to any of these lists, please reply to me and let me know which ones.
