Clean Energy Is Not Radioactive: Protect New York’s Climate Law
|
Thursday, September 5th 12:00pm at Marriott Downtown, 100 E Onondaga St, Syracuse
Governor Hochul’s summit in Syracuse, on unceded Onondaga land, will discuss the state’s strategy for our energy future. On the agenda is the release of a “blueprint” for propping up the nuclear power industry. Join us outside this summit to protect the clean AND safe energy future everyone deserves: one where we commit to climate justice, reject nuclear and all false fixes (including “renewable” natural gas and hydrogen), and create the future that we want for generations of people yet to come.
The organizers encourage masking due to ongoing high levels of COVID-19 in our communities. Masks and hand sanitizer will be available.

How Unchained plans to increase incarcerated people’s access to books in New York state prisons
|
The Syracuse-based nonprofit reached out to more than 250 people incarcerated in New York state prisons to collect book requests.
Books and reading in prison are notoriously thorny topics for prison officials. Earlier this year, New York Focus found that prisons regularly block access to books about the criminal legal system, including books about solitary confinement and books about incarcerated women.

Syracuse Marriott Downtown – 100 East Onondaga St. Syr 13202
Thursday, September 5th
12pm: Gather outside the Marriott downtown
100 E Onondaga St. in Syracuse
12:30pm: press conference and picket
New York State can lead the way to a clean energy future by building renewable energy, yet recent announcements from state agencies make it clear our climate justice plan is in trouble.
A report from the Governor’s office signals the state may be poised to push back the first major milestone of the landmark Climate Law–70% renewable electricity by 2030–accompanied by the announcement of a NYSERDA “Future Energy Economy” summit promoting nuclear power development and other false solutions to the climate crisis.
But all is not lost! It was the hard work of grassroots movements and ordinary people like you that got our climate law passed in the first place–and now it’s our hard work that will protect it.
So join us outside this summit to protect the clean AND safe energy future everyone deserves: one where we commit to climate justice, reject nuclear and all false fixes (including “renewable” natural gas and hydrogen), and create the future that we want for generations of people yet to come.

Start/Finish: Everson Plaza, 401 Harrison St, Syracuse 13202
A 5K Run and 3K Roll/Stroll event that traces a portion of the infamous ‘redline’ that helped segregate Syracuse. During the Great Depression, the Federal Government worked with local officials and real estate professionals to draw maps that placed red lines around neighborhoods deemed too risky to receive federal housing assistance. These ‘redlining’ maps deprived Syracuse’s most racially integrated neighborhoods of opportunity, and their effects can still be felt today. Run the Redline to experience the physical spaces shaped by these federal policies.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
