Rochester becomes largest city in New York to opt into Good Cause eviction protections

The Rochester City Council has approved the strongest possible version of Good Cause eviction protections, making it the largest city in New York to opt into the law.

Prior to the vote, Council members amended the bill to exempt only those landlords who own a single rental unit– instead of those owning fewer than 10, as was initially proposed. That move matches other cities around the state that have voted to opt into Good Cause and vastly reduces the number of units exempt from Good Cause protections.

New Yorkers to Governor Hochul: “PPL Puts Lives Like Mine At Risk”

On September 30th, Governor Hochul announced PPL as the company selected to run the state’s entire consumer directed home care program – eliminating hundreds of small, local businesses in the process. Based in Georgia and backed by private-equity investors, PPL has a checkered history and a track record of failure.

The Consumer Directed Personal Assistance program provides essential, personalized care to elderly, sick, or disabled New Yorkers in the comfort of their own home. The program’s home care workers help patients live independently and with dignity, assisting with everything from making meals and eating, to taking medications, to bathing, dressing, and tasks typically reserved for a nurse.

Top Ten EFF Digital Security Resources for People Concerned About the Incoming Trump Administration

For most people in the U.S., the threats that they face and the methods by which they are likely to be surveilled or harassed have not changed, but the consequences …may become much more serious, especially for vulnerable populations such as journalists, activists, LGBTQ+ people, people seeking or providing abortion-related care, Black or Indigenous people, and undocumented immigrants.

EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) has decades of experience in providing digital privacy and security resources, particularly for vulnerable people. We’ve written a lot of resources over the years and here are the top ten.

Israel bombs al-Mawasi camps, school amid wave of attacks across Gaza

UN’s Lazzarini says world must not become ‘numb’ after Israeli strikes kill about 50 Palestinians within 24 hours.

Israel pounded Gaza overnight with deadly attacks targeting displaced people in two camps and a school, as it ordered the forced evacuation of one of the last hospitals barely operating in the enclave’s besieged north.

The military launched a wave of attacks on the so-called “safe zone” of al-Mawasi in the south

Tim Atseff: Final Edition

On View through December 29, 2024

Everson Museum of Art, 401 Harrison St, Syracuse

For the Everson, Atseff presents a selection of recent works about the continued shuttering of American newspapers—and what it means for the future of journalistic integrity, an informed public, and national political debate.

Since 2005, the United States has lost one-third of its newspapers and two-thirds of its journalists. On average, 2.5 newspapers closed each week in 2023, most of which were small, local publications that served as the only news source in their geographical area. Experts believe these statistics will continue to worsen, further contributing to the existing spread of misinformation and increased political polarization.

Join NY Renews to Demand Climate Funding on Jan. 22

In 2025, New York State’s landmark Climate Law is under attack. With fast approaching deadlines and a climate change denier headed to the Oval Office, New York can and must be a climate leader for the rest of the nation.

Thankfully, in 2025 New York State will start collecting substantial amounts of money under the state’s Climate Law for the first time. It’s our job to ensure that money is spent effectively for climate justice.

RSVP today to join us in Albany on January 22nd for a statewide Fund Climate mobilization and lobby day to demand action on the climate crisis.

SYRACUSE  STREET HEAT

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.

A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team:  Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….

To learn more, call Ann or Ed: (315) 478 4571.

EVERY FRIDAY…4 to 4:45 p.m. (“CEASE FIRE NOW”, etc./ Palestine solidarity)

Focused on the war in the middle East…Israel’s military genocide of Gaza and  invasion of Lebanon. We disperse along the sidewalk with our signs at the very busy intersection of Erie Blvd East and East Genesee St. (across from the DeWitt fire station; park in the nearby mini mall lot.) When the temperature is below 29 degrees, we cancel!
