What’s up with the Good Cause vote in Syracuse?Learn about Good Cause Eviction on Tuesday, February 10th at 6pm! Syracuse’s Council votes on Good Cause on February 23rd. They’re split in half on whether to pass this law that would strengthen tenant protections for tens of thousands of Syracuse residents. Let’s talk about it — join our mass call to learn about the bill, which Councilmembers are for and against it, and how you can make your voice heard before the Feb 23 vote! Over 60% of Syracuse households are tenants, and we have some of the highest rent hikes in America. Good Cause protections limit rent hikes, and give tenants a right to a lease renewal to stop retaliation and give us security in our homes. Last year, after Council made us the only city in New York to reject Good Cause, we elected new leaders. Will they stand with tenants or landlords? Register for Call Here Email Syracuse Council to Pass Good Cause or call (315) 448-8466 to share your support

Club America – Is it Civics Education or Something Else? Many people are commenting these days on the need for greater civic education in our high schools. A review of research on this does confirm it sorely lacking. As for NY state, the Seal of Civic Readiness is only OPTIONAL and not offered in every school. Organizations like TurningPointUSA (TPUSA ) have decided to fill that void by establishing Club Americas in high schools nationwide; several of our area high schools already have such clubs. But is the civic education being offered in these clubs filling the real need? It may not be. TPUSA values, principles and beliefs are deeply embedded in its many programs. For example, they describe their TurningPoint Education program as “dedicated to reclaiming the education of our children, reviving virtuous education focused on truth, goodness and beauty, and restoring God as the founder of education.” They describe their Turning Point Academy and its “5C Seeding Schools” as “…committed to advancing all types of Christian conservative values education”. If this is not your idea of civics education it’s important for your school administrators and school boards, who might be reviewing a Club America application right now, to hear from you. Tell Congress to Vote ‘No’ on the SAVE Act!Last year, concerned citizens stopped the SAVE Act, a horrible voter-suppression bill that would require a passport or an original birth certificate to register to vote. Considering that 21 million American citizens don’t have immediate access to either of those documents, the SAVE Act is incredibly dangerous to our right to be heard at the ballot box. We convinced the Senate to block the SAVE Act last year, but now it’s back. Republicans in the House have introduced a SUPERCHARGED version. And this time they’re demanding the Senate change filibuster rules to pass it! Call Congress to Stop the SAVE Act!

Change Your Party By Feb 14thPrimary elections are important. It is when voters decide which candidate should be on their party line in November. But turnout is low. In New York, you have to be registered in a party to be able to vote in primary elections. 30% of voters in Onondaga County are not enrolled in a party. If you want a say on who is on your ballot in November, you must change your registration by February 14th! In some areas, the primary is the election! Make sure you have a say! Economic Power –Delete the Starbucks App Where we choose to spend our money and time is one of our greatest collective strengths. Every purchase we make, and every time we just show up to help, we demonstrate our values and progressive ideals for human rights, labor rights, social justice, and environmental protection. More Information about Deleting Starbucks Union baristas are calling on Starbucks customers to #DeleteTheApp to show Starbucks that you stand with baristas, not billion-dollar companies. When you delete the Starbucks mobile app off your phones, it sends a direct message: there is no business as usual while baristas are fighting for a fair union contract and end to union busting. Syracuse Street Heat
Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for. Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!)
EVERY FRIDAY from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m.
Focused on the war in the middle East…Israel’s military genocide of Gaza and invasion of Lebanon. We disperse along the sidewalk with our signs at the very busy intersection of Erie Blvd East and East Genesee St. (across from the DeWitt fire station; park in the nearby mini mall lot.) When the temperature is below 20 degrees, we cancel! Learn more on Syracuse Peace Council’s website.
