A Special Message from our Protest Committee: We hope you’re all doing your best to stay well and steady in these unsettling times. We’re writing with a message about dealing with counter-protestors. We have the First Amendment right of peaceful assembly free of threat or intimidation. We value a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and family-friendly atmosphere when we assemble to celebrate our Constitution. Sadly, some of our neighbors do not value the First Amendment as we do and will approach us with taunts and hostility. Do NOT take the bait. Do not engage. Ignore them. It denies them the attention that they want. Our power does not come from escalating with those who seek to disrupt our celebration of our Constitution. Our collective power comes from adherence to truth and morality, from the care of our neighbors, and from our discipline and dedication in saving our democracy. Stay focused on our goals. Take comfort knowing that all of our actions are in alignment our Constitution. If you ever feel threatened by counter-protestors, don’t hesitate to call the police. In the words of Dr. King, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”.

A core intention of CNY Solidarity Coalition is to bring together and support organizations already out there helping directly affected communities in the Central New York area.
Our Allied Organizations are particularly important to the Central New York community, and many people in our Coalition are also involved with them. If you’re looking for ways to become more involved, these organizations are a great place to start:
Onondaga Lake Watch
Onondaga Lake Watch is a citizenled initiative and community group focused on monitoring, protecting, and revitalizing Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, New York. Over the past year we have been focused on the serious potential problem of residential exposure to mercury from the lake. Recently we have come to learn that this problem may well have been substantially underestimated, given a new understanding of the adverse health effects of the worst form of mercury, dimethylmercury, and the likelihood that local communities have been — and are continuing to be — significantly impacted. Worse yet, neither the NYSDEC nor the U.S. EPA has ever once mentioned this contaminant in all the countless technical documents leading up to the Record of Decision (ROD) for the lake cleanup! This fact alone represents a serious cause for concern.

Due to serious safety concerns, CNY Solidarity does not endorse or encourage protests directly outside the Mattydale ICE facility. Instead, we recommend supporting the multifaceted efforts of the Salina Melts ICE Campaign to have the Town of Salina create meaningful oversight over the Facility! Details are here. NY Democrats Weekend Of Action Saturday, July 25, 10:00 AM – 06:00 PM Sunday, July 26, 10:00 AM – 06:00 PM Several events both days; see registration link This weekend, July 25th and 26th, the New York State Democratic Party will host a full weekend of action in the region! The goal? Get as many people out as possible! In an election season as contested as this, real change comes from ordinary people making the difference in their communities. Witness to Injustice Program Saturday, July 25, 09:30 AM – 12:30 PM Betts Branch Library, 4862 South Salina St, Syracuse Witness to Injustice is a unique three-hour interactive group educational experience. It uses an experiential, participatory model to share the disturbing history of what Indigenous Peoples have experienced through colonization with a focus on the experience of the Onondaga Nation and other Haudenosaunee Peoples. The program seeks to foster truth, understanding and respect between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in the part of the world now known as the United States; especially in the territory stewarded by people of the Onondaga Nation and other Haudenosaunee peoples. Onondaga Lake Watch – Public Meeting Event Tuesday, July 28, 06:30 PM – 07:30 PM Liverpool Public Library-310 Tulip Street Join Onondaga Lake Watch for a community meeting exploring an important environmental health question: Could airborne dimethylmercury be affecting our community? Mercury contamination in and around Onondaga Lake has been documented for decades, but questions remain about whether organic forms of mercury could become airborne under certain environmental conditions. This meeting will present the scientific basis for an independent investigation focused on evaluating that possibility. Our goal is to provide factual, science-based information, answer community questions, and discuss how an independent investigation could help determine whether additional environmental monitoring is warranted. Whether you’re a resident, scientist, health professional, student, or simply interested in the future of the Onondaga Lake community, you’re welcome to attend. Admission is free.
