Sign the Petition: Investigate the FBI and Director Kash Patel
Kash Patel was appointed earlier this year by Trump to be a loyalist, even if it means completely disregarding the law. During Biden’s administration, ICE wasn’t permitted to make arrests at churches, schools, or places of worship. Once Trump took office, he ruthlessly revoked these guidelines.
And now, the administration is going after sitting judges to dismantle any remaining guardrails around their mass deportation policies. We need to hold the FBI Director and the FBI accountable!

From Back from the Brink
On April 10th, Representatives Jim McGovern (MA-02) and Jill Tokuda (HI-02) introduced H. Res. 317, which lays out how we can fundamentally reform U.S. nuclear weapons policy and achieve a world free of nuclear weapons.
The resolution is a huge step in increasing public awareness and building Congressional support and leadership behind this growing movement. A similar resolution last Congressional session had 44 co-sponsors, and now we need your help to significantly increase that total during the 119th Congress.
We’ve already had people take action in 42 states. Will you join the fight and contact your representative?

Contact Congress to Restore Cuts to Public Broadcasting
WAER Syracuse Public Media and other public radio and TV broadcasting stations are facing a claw-back of already-approved federal funding. If that funding is lost, that would mean for WAER scaling back their local news operation and making cuts to nationally distributed NPR, BBC and other news programs, as well as some music and entertainment. You can help by contacting members of congress to ask them to oppose the White House’s recission request that was presented this week.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor can be found here.
If you’ve written a letter, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

The rise of end times fascism
Naomi Klein and Astra Taylor
The governing ideology of the far right has become a monstrous, supremacist survivalism. Our task is to build a movement strong enough to stop them
…To put it bluntly, the most powerful people in the world are preparing for the end of the world, an end they themselves are frenetically accelerating.

Opinion: Continued police brutality must be met with active demands for reform
That means writing to local and state officials and demanding transparency from local police departments. Push for funding that supports mental health, housing and education resources instead of more weapons and armor for cops.
We must start and sign petitions that call for real reform, whether that’s removing school resource officers, pushing for body camera access or fighting for civilian review boards with real power.
It’s time to correct the rhetoric, not just the law.

Trump Brings Britain’s ‘Moron Premium’ to the U.S. Economy
When Donald Trump launched his tariff war on April 2, lawmakers in Europe struggled to understand the strategy. Was it a bluff, or did he really mean to collapse global trade, stock markets, and the Western alliance in one reckless game of 4-D chess?
On April 9, however, the president discovered something that we in the United Kingdom already know: Against the bond market, there is only 2-D chess, and you always lose. Because the Brits have been here before.

AIPAC targets Senate Democrats who backed Sanders on Israel aid
The six-figure ad buy targets 11 states on television and on social media with senators who backed the measures, which overwhelmingly failed in the Senate. Sanders has previously introduced similar unsuccessful measures to block aid to Israel amid the country’s war with Hamas and criticism of its handling of the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Onondaga County Legislative Session
Tuesday, May 6 at 1:00pm
401 Montgomery Street, Room 407 Court House
County Executive Ryan McMahon is back for $27 million of our taxpayer money to give to OCIDA to purchase more property for corporations. OCIDA has already spent more than $30 million of taxpayer money buying land for Micron. This is currently tied to amending the 2025 county budget giving $5 million for the county’s housing initiative program and $1 million for using AI to support county operations. These proposals should at least be separated to be voted on individually. With the highest concentration of poverty in the country, more families who can’t afford a place to live, there are much better uses for this money then corporate subsidies. Please attend this county legislative session to give a public comment or email your public comment to OnondagaCountyLegislature@ongov.net

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
