I’m deeply concerned about ICE’s recent arrest of Columbia University student activist Mahmoud Khalil. Mr. Khalil is a green card holder who is in this country legally and has not been charged with any crime. He has been detained purely because he exercised constitutionally protected free speech rights in ways that this administration dislikes. President Trump has promised that many more similar arrests will follow soon.
This is a massive injustice to Mr. Khalil, but also represents a grave threat to the basic constitutional protections of free speech and due process on which our democratic republic depends. If the administration can discard these protections at will, we are all in grave danger. Now is the time for concerned citizens to speak up and take action.
