Reverse Waitlist Decision for Working Families on the Onondaga County Childcare Assistance
The recent decision to implement a waitlist for the Childcare Assistance Program in Onondaga County presents a significant threat to the livelihood of countless families in our community. Come June 1st, many stable and working families will be at risk of losing their jobs due to a waitlist that extends 1-2 months. Childcare costs can amount to approximately $350 a week PER child, which is sometimes more than rent, making it insurmountable for families to afford especially with such limited notice…
Note: Onondaga County has over $200 million in their rainy-day fund and is still funneling over $100 million of taxpayer dollars to build an expensive aquarium.

Support the PFAS Discharge Disclosure Act
This bill would require semiconductor companies (and other polluters) to test their wastewater for 40 different PFAS chemicals and publicly report what they find. As you may know, PFAS are extremely durable and highly toxic compounds that have polluted drinking water across the country. One source is the semiconductor industry, which uses hundreds of these chemicals during the production process, and too often releases them in their wastewater. This bill will allow New Yorkers to understand the scale and extent of PFAS pollution so we can hold industry accountable.

Call Your Assembly Member: Co-Sponsor The New York for All Act!
With President Donald Trump promising to tear families apart, devastate immigrant communities, and carry out mass deportations, it is even more critical to protect our immigrant neighbors. The New York for All Act will do just that by prohibiting state and local resources from being diverted to carry out a cruel and inhumane federal deportation agenda.
As immigrant New Yorkers face heightened threats, we must prevent local and state law enforcement and agencies from conspiring with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
When local agencies collude with ICE, it leads to unconstitutional racial profiling, as well as the misuse of our nlocal tax dollars and resources. Such practices are damaging to the public safety and well-being of all New Yorkers, and instead divide us and promote harmful fear-mongering.
The New York for All Act S.2235 (Gounardes) / A.3506 (Reyes) will protect immigrant New Yorkers, preserve state and local resources for our communities, and ensure New York dollars cannot be diverted to carry out a cruel, politicized immigration agenda.
Please call you Assembly Member and urge them to co-sponsor The New York for All Act.

Stop the No Contempt Clause!
Email your senators — Republicans and Democrats — to demand they speak out LOUDLY against the No Contempt Clause! The GOP hid a reckless provision to shield Trump officials from contempt of court in their Medicaid-slashing megabill. We need to get Republican senators on the record about that sneak-attack on democracy — and push Democrats to disrupt Republicans’ anti-democracy agenda with every tool at their disposal.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found here.
If you’ve written a letter, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

Indivisible: the mass movement leading the progressive fight against Trump
Indivisible, a progressive grassroots organization with a national office and thousands of offshoots in cities and towns around the country, grew out of a Google Doc created by Ezra Levin Leah Greenberg, when Trump won in 2016. Now, more than eight years later, the organization has matured and formed a critical flank of the opposition, using its millions of members across the country to quickly spin up town halls, rallies, educational events and protests.

Opinion: Continued police brutality must be met with active demands for reform
That means writing to local and state officials and demanding transparency from local police departments. Push for funding that supports mental health, housing and education resources instead of more weapons and armor for cops.
We must start and sign petitions that call for real reform, whether that’s removing school resource officers, pushing for body camera access or fighting for civilian review boards with real power.
It’s time to correct the rhetoric, not just the law.

Syracuse.com has obtained the bulk of Micron’s report, which the county and other public agencies have refused to release since December.
“…the report says: The influx of thousands of construction workers and new residents would squeeze an already tight housing market, making it even harder to find an affordable place to live. Traffic would overwhelm local roads unless expensive improvements are made, including widening major roads and building two new highway interchanges. Local governments would collect $500 million more per year, but property taxes could still rise as the demand for services does, Micron’s analysis says.”

DHS asks for 20,000 National Guard troops for immigration roundups, Pentagon reviewing request
The Department of Homeland Security has asked for 20,000 National Guard troops to assist with immigration roundups across the country, and the Pentagon is reviewing the unusual request, a U.S. official confirmed to The Associated Press. DHS asked for the troops to help carry out President Donald Trump’s “mandate from the American people to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens,” department spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said. She said DHS will ”use every tool and resource available” to do so because the “safety of American citizens comes first.”
Unlike the troops deployed at the southern border, these National Guard units would come from the states and be used to assist in deportation operations in the interior of the country.

Ryan said: “eBay made $10.3 billion last year. I know for a fact what the employees were looking for was modest, minimal.”
“They have been at the bargaining table with eBay for over a year now,” Syracuse City Auditor Alex Marion told NewsChannel 9. “This reeks of eBay not bargaining in good faith.”

How the Backlash to the George Floyd Protests Set the Stage for Another Trump Administration
That’s why knowing our history is more important now than ever before. Learning about the power and collective resistance of Black communities, of queer people, of labor organizers, and of immigrants provides us with a road map forward.
Trump isn’t creating a fascist new world, he’s revitalizing a fascist old one that we have fought before — and that’s as terrifying as it is familiar.

Heather Cox Richardson’s Update on 47, Musk, and the Damage
…Musk’s destruction of the United States Agency for International Development, slashing about 80% of its grants, is killing about 103 people an hour, most of them children. The total so far is about 300,000 people, according to Boston University infectious disease mathematical modeller Dr. Brooke Nichols. Ryan Cooper of The American Prospect reported today that about 1,500 babies a day are born HIV-positive because Musk’s cuts stopped their mothers’ medication.

City of Syracuse Candidate Town Hall On Tenant Issues
Wednesday, June 4, 6 pm
Victory Temple Fellowship Church, 817 E Willow St, Syracuse NY 13203
Syracuse is 61% tenants, and we’re the backbone of our city — we’re the cooks, the nurses, the teachers, and more that make it run every day. But despite having some of the highest rent hikes in the country, our Council is the only one in the state to reject Good Cause protections that limit rent hikes and protect lease renewals.
Join us June 4 at 6PM to hear directly from candidates how they’ll fight for a more affordable future for Syracuse families and address issues like code enforcement, lead, registering rentals, and addressing child homelessness.

Birdhouses for Fair Housing
Wednesday, June 11 at 5:30pm
SKY Armory, 351 S Clinton St, Syracuse
CNY Fair Housing is excited to invite you to our 10th Annual Birdhouses for Fair Housing live auction event! Like many nonprofits across the nation, CNY Fair Housing has lost critical funding as the federal government rolls back fair housing protections and support. The programs that have funded our organization for more than 30 years are on the chopping block. While the federal government may be turning its back on fair housing, we will not stop our work enforcing our country’s civil rights laws. We need your help to weather the storm and continue to fight for the rights of the people in Central New York!
Tickets to the event will help CNY Fair Housing keep its doors open and continue to work towards eliminating housing discrimination, promoting open communities, and ensuring equal access to housing opportunities for all people in Central and Northern New York.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
