At our meeting on Sunday, we heard from all our committees about what they are working on. Below is a summary of the meeting or you can watch it on YouTube:
We learned more about the Greater Syracuse Southside Neighborhood Association’s food pantry and the issue they are facing with their space. To learn more and sign a petition to support a food pantry in Syracuse Southside, click here. Amelia from Syracuse DSA talked with us about the importance of marshals at events and protests. Future opportunities to be trained as a marshal will be announced by the Syracuse Peace Council.
Our Planning Protest group has been busy with their weekly Friday popup rallies and are starting to plan for No Kings on October 18th! Stay tuned for details. Our Federal Legislative Engagement Team has been frustrated with the lack of engagement from Schumer and Gillibrand and calls are being asked to be made. With another government funding deadline approaching we do not want Democrats caving again to Republicans. Tell your representatives to fund Care Over Cuts! And tell us what your demands are! No back room deals! We have seen time and time again that our calls work. Keep up the pressure!
Find contact information for your Senators and Representatives here.
The Electoral Action Team is in full swing of getting postcards together to support county legislator candidates! Postcard signing, phone banking and canvassing opportunities will be announced. To find a candidate you support visit our website. Our Outreach Team is working on ways to reach as many people as possible and is looking into putting together a panel discussion about the impact of the Republican budget bill, specifically on families and education.
Climate Justice worked hard on getting comments submitted on Micron’s DEIS and is now moving to the economic justice issues that will be critical for Micron presence in CNY and the lead & water issue that seems to be a never ending issue here. The State & Local Action Team is advocating for a special session for the legislature to come back to Albany to pass the NY 4 All act and to tax the super wealthy to fill the budget gaps from the federal government. The city of Syracuse released its draft vision zero action plan that you can read here. And share your thoughts with your city representatives. Also there will be a public hearing on Monday September 15th, at 5:30pm about using drones as a first responder. Please attend to share your thoughts. There will be a proposition on your ballots this year about changing county legislator terms from 2 to 4 years and will be sharing more information about this soon.
If you are interested in helping with any of the above activities, reply to this email and we will connect you with group leaders.
Our next meeting will be Sunday, October 5th at 3:00 pm.

From the Workers’ Center of CNY
Thank you to everyone who is supporting us. With Rural & Migrant Ministry, Inc. and our members and allies we’ve compiled a list of at least 45 workers detained in Thursday’s raid at the Cato Nutribar factory. Thanks to support from Syracuse Immigrant and Refugee Defense Network, The New York Immigration Coalition, and FLX Rapid Response Network we are in touch with family members or loved ones for every single worker to coordinate legal and direct support.
We’ll have requests coming throughout the week. Of the 45 all remained detained as of Saturday except for 3 nursing mothers who were released late Thursday after being pressured for hours by CBP to have their children brought into detention with them!! Now we are hearing from some families that their loved ones have already been deported with no due process. The raw racist cruelty of this regime is on full display, but the community is rising in response. The bravery and solidarity of the immigrant community and allies has been amazing and sustains us and now we need everyone’s help to show the immigrant community we are with them: to date, the only information we have received on whereabouts of detained workers has been the handful of workers detained who have managed to make a phone call to a loved one and report their whereabouts and who else is with them. And one member, a nursing mom with at 8 month old, who lawyers were able to find at Wellesley Island CBP station.
📢 We demand CBP give detainees access to phone calls and lawyers!! 👉☎️ Please call on Governor Kathy Hochul 518-474-8390 to help us locate workers and prevent any further deportations, many people have pending court dates!!
👉☎️ Call on Kirsten Gillibrand to inspect conditions at Oswego and Wellesley island CBP stations ASAP: Syr office 315-448-0470, North Country 315-376-6118, NYC 212-688-6262

Economic Power – Boycott Amazon!
Where we choose to spend our money is one of our greatest collective strengths. Every purchase we make is an opportunity to support companies and products that align with our values and progressive ideals for human rights, labor rights, social justice, and environmental protection.
We believe in the right of all human beings to live in a safe environment with fair access to opportunity within an inclusive economy. Each week we will highlight one company or product that does NOT align with our shared values and ideals.

Tell Gov. Hochul: Reject Trump’s Fracked Gas Pipelines; Protect New York’s Environment!
As the climate crisis rages, Trump and the fossil fuel industry are working to bully our state into approving massive fracked gas pipelines that we’ve already rejected, including the Northeast Supply Enhancement (NESE) Pipeline, a zombie pipeline whose water quality permit was denied in 2019 and 2020 by the DEC.
Fossil Fuel Pipelines poison our water, destroy habitats, raise our utility bills, and put our communities at risk. With a decision on the NESE Pipeline looming, Governor Hochul and the DEC must stand up to Trump and reject this pipeline.
Call Gov. Hochul – 877-559-7809
In addition, we need Governor Hochul’s Energy Research and Development Authority to launch NY’s program to make polluters pay for their emissions and invest in making New York a place where everyone can breathe, survive, and thrive.

Letters to the Editor
CNY Solidarity Coalition encourages letters to the editor regarding issues affecting us locally and nationwide. We also recommend that letters are written in response to recent articles or other letters; these are more likely to get published. Links to these articles will be included each week.
If you’re looking for a subject to write about, here are this week’s suggestions:
Guidelines for writing Letters to the Editor, with a link to previously submitted letters, can be found on our website.
If you’ve written a Letter to the Editor, whether it’s been published or not, consider forwarding a copy to cnysolnews@gmail.com, so that it can be added to our website’s “Opinion” section.

Why were Oswego, Cayuga deputies at ICE raid in Cato?
ICE raided Nutriton Bar Confectioners in Cato, detaining dozens of people and leaving the community around the factory in shock. The specific reason for the ICE raid remains unclear but was a part of a U.S. Department of Homeland Security investigation into felony crimes, according to Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck.

Syracuse Street Heat is just one, very unencumbered way to work for peace and social justice. We’re part of a decades-long grassroots tradition here, in Ithaca and elsewhere. We stand out and stand up for what we stand for.
A handful of us stand at busy intersections, for 45 minutes at rush hour, pivoting to the traffic with hand-held signs. We want to get the public thinking about issues often underrepresented in the media. We’re there weekly in almost all of Syracuse’s weather (we seldom cancel). Bring your own sign – or use one of ours. No meetings or committees, so participation time is minimal (yay!) Our Team: Ann, Dick, Ed, Geoff, Jim, Julienne, Les, Leslie, Peter….
