At its June 2nd meeting, the Citizen Review Board (CRB) said that it could not resume its investigations of police misconduct complaints because the City Attorney told them the City would not provide legal representation if they were sued for doing so. In late May, the NY Civil Liberties(ACLU) informed the City and the CRB that a recent Appellate Court decision does NOT apply to our CRB because the decision was entirely limited to the unique powers that the Rochester Police Accountability Board had to direct police discipline, and because our CRB’s findings and recommendations are, and always have been, only advisory.
Please go to the meeting of the Syracuse Citizen Review Board next Tuesday, July 7th at 5:30pm to speak during the public comment period.
Ask the CRB Board Members:
1. How have they responded to the communication and legal opinion from the NYCLU?
2. Have they taken steps to purchase or request authorization to purchase Directors and Officers Insurance so they would have legal representation if a lawsuit against them was actually initiated.
3. Who wrote and posted the 7 slides on the CRB’s facebook page that present the City Attorney’s mis-interpretation of the Appellate Court decision, and make misleading and legally inaccurate statements to the public that run counter the CRB’s own interest in resuming investigations.
Tell the CRB Board members that:
4. If the CRB really wants the public’s help, it should not be making statements that justify the suspension of its powers. It should instead fight to be able to resume conducting investigations according to its enabling legislation, which remains in force.

Good planning is essential to ensure a smooth energy transition, strategically right-size the gas system, insure that the right investments are made at at the appropriate times, and to save ratepayers money. But so far, the gas planning has not yielded the hoped-for outcomes. Now in 2026, there’s an opportunity to reimagine gas planning and make it better. Register here
