A Special Message from our Protest Committee: We hope you’re all doing your best to stay well and steady in these unsettling times. We’re writing with a message about dealing with counter-protestors. We have the First Amendment right of peaceful assembly free of threat or intimidation. We value a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and family-friendly atmosphere when we assemble to celebrate our Constitution. Sadly, some of our neighbors do not value the First Amendment as we do and will approach us with taunts and hostility. Do NOT take the bait. Do not engage. Ignore them. It denies them the attention that they want. Our power does not come from escalating with those who seek to disrupt our celebration of our Constitution. Our collective power comes from adherence to truth and morality, from the care of our neighbors, and from our discipline and dedication in saving our democracy. Stay focused on our goals. Take comfort knowing that all of our actions are in alignment our Constitution. If you ever feel threatened by counter-protestors, don’t hesitate to call the police. In the words of Dr. King, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”.

INTERFAITH B.C. LOOKS UNDER THE HOOD Race Matters, interfaith book club Monday, August 17, 07:00 PM – 08:00 PM Zoom Event Race Matters, our interfaith book club, will probe the ambivalence all of us feel toward questions of right and wrong in “Crook Manifesto – A Novel” by Colson Whitehead, two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. The novel is the 2nd in a trilogy of stories set in Harlem. The 1st was “Harlem Shuffle” which Race Matters dissected [in 2023] when we “listened” to the life tale of Ray Carney, successful furniture store owner…and part-time fence of stolen goods. The 1st is history from the 60s; the 2nd from 70s and his latest [just released] “Cool Machine” about honest/corrupt life in NYC during the 80s. DHS New Rule impacting older immigrants – What Advocates Need to Know Wednesday, August 26, 02:00 PM – 03:00 PM Virtual webinar The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a new rule regarding public charge determinations, which will negatively impact certain older immigrants and their families. Public charge determinations are relevant for people seeking admission to the United States and people seeking to adjust their immigration status to Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR), also known as “green card” holders. The new rule enables immigration officers to consider a wide variety of factors when determining if someone may depend on the government as their main source of support in the future. The new rule takes effect September 18, 2026. In this webinar, Public Charge Final Rule: What Advocates Need to Know, presenters will provide an overview of the new public charge rule, including what has changed from the previous rule, and provide advocates with resources to stay up-to-date on public charge changes.
