CNY Solidarity & Indvisible Onondaga County

On Saturday, August 29, 2026 from 11AM -2PM, the CNY Solidarity Coalition and Indivisible Onondaga County brought community members together for a ‘Big Beautiful Bridge Brigade’ to draw public attention to voting and this November’s general election. Participants were stationed at three locations along the NYS Thruway: they were Thompson Road in Syracuse, Tulip Street in Liverpool and Canton Street in Warners. Travelers in New York along the Thruway between Buffalo and the Massachusetts state line, as well as along I-81 from the Southern Tier to the North Country and along I-87 in the eastern part of the State, viewed democracy in action. Posted on overpasses in both directions, citizens stood with banners emblazoned with slogans such as ‘Stop The Chaos – Vote’ and ‘Vote Change’. Forty-two grassroots groups dedicated to protecting democracy sent teams to 50 interstate overpasses to make their message clear: the current leadership in Washington is harmful to America’s economy and Constitution. The action was organized to make civic participation visible, accessible, and impossible to ignore and to get voters to the polls to flip the House and the Senate. Dan Crane, one of the local organizers, said: “In 2024, too many of our fellow citizens slept through the election. We’re here to try and wake them up.” Christine Herb, another one of the local event organizers said: “I am here today to fight like hell for our country, our democracy, our Constitution & our Rule of Law, also to fight for our tax dollars being stolen by the President.” Margaret Luttinger stated: “I’m here because I’m deeply concerned about our loss of rights under the Constitution, escalating costs, increased surveillance and inhumane acts against innocent people.” On the Tulip Street overpass, an estimated total of 10,800 vehicles saw the banners! There will be three more similar events leading up to the midterms. Organizers have stated, “Our first priority is the safety of participants and drivers alike. We’re not anti-government. In fact, we are worried about the erosion of many of our civil rights that Americans have fought and died for since 1776. We see these actions as one of protecting our hard-won freedoms.”

2026 Indigenous Peoples Day Festival seeks support We’re excited to announce the 2026 Indigenous Peoples Day Festival at the Onondaga Nation Fieldhouse on Saturday, October 10 (note that in previous years it has been held on Sunday). The event organizing team is led by Onondaga community members and includes Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation (NOON)/Syracuse Peace Council and We of Italian and Syracuse Heritage in CNY (WISH CNY) along with support from other community organizations. We hope other organizations will join us this year as a sponsor for this important celebration of culture, education and collaboration between The Onondaga Nation, other Indigenous Peoples and the wider region. To sustain this growing collaboration, we warmly invite support through financial sponsorship, in-kind contributions, assistance with publicity, help recruiting volunteers and other tasks. Organizations are asked to contribute as you are able, with financial sponsorship ranging in the past from $50-$1,000. We’re requesting responses by September 11, but welcome them much sooner. It’s easiest for us if you fill out this simple online form to respond. We greatly appreciate your consideration of our request and hope to work with you to make the 2026 Festival an even more impactful celebration of Indigenous Culture, History and our shared commitment to reconciliation, healing and justice. Stop Toxic Garbage Water From Polluting New York’s Rivers, Lakes, Drinking Water Supplies, and Environment New York River Watch’s statewide report found that between 2019 and 2023, more than half a billion gallons (532,300,000) of landfill leachate were sent each year from New York and out-of-state landfills to municipal sewage treatment plants. These facilities are designed to treat human sewage—not the complex mixture of chemicals found in landfill leachate. Nearly one-third of this leachate—approximately 167 million gallons—ended up in rivers and lakes officially designated as drinking water sources, including the Hudson River, Mohawk River, Niagara River, and Lake Ontario. After more than three years of waiting for these long-promised regulations, DEC released a proposal on July 1, 2026 that still allows these toxic contaminants to be released into our waters. Submit a public comment by 5pm September 9th! New York has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to get this right. DEC must bring together the best scientific, engineering, and public health expertise to create a plan that truly protects our water, communities, and environment. The state must not create a system that shifts the costs and consequences of toxic pollution onto communities, and the landfills that profit from managing this waste must be held accountable. Whether a school had a chapter in the 2025-26 school year ( as did FM, Baldwinsville, Cicero-North Syracuse, Bodley (Fulton), Mexico Academy and Moore (Central Square), a new school year requires a new application to establish a club chapter. Know Your Rights The Trump administration has repeatedly refused to rule out sending federal agents to polling locations this fall. Voters may be worried about this unlawful threat. The fear is understandable. The threat is meant to discourage eligible Americans from exercising their right to vote. This administration knows that voters have the power and will to exercise their rights. Voters should know that the law is on their side.
