Articles of the Week:

First, read Dr. Thomas Keck’s article in the Washington Post:

Biden is considering overhauling the Supreme Court. That’s happened during every crisis in U.S. democracy.

During six major crises in U.S. history, debates over reshaping the court were linked to debates over whether democracy could survive.

Zoom with Czarny: CNY Solidarity’s Thomas Keck.  See it Here

I am pleased to have my friend Thomas Keck on. We talk filibuster and Scotus reform and the attack on Democracy happening across the country. Hope you enjoy.

Cops and their allies have pushed hard for new wave of stringent anti-protest bills. Read the Article in Salon

Since last summer, police have lobbied for a crackdown on “riots,” with new laws that give them even more power

“…Republicans have proposed at least 100 “anti-riot” bills in 33 states from last June to this March. These measures aim to address protest-related activities by greatly expanding the definition of “riot,” granting criminal immunity to drivers who hit “rioters” with their cars, suspending state benefits for those who participate in a “riot” and increasing penalties for demonstrators who block traffic.”

‘We have to act now’: Historian lays out a ‘nightmare’ scenario for a stolen 2024 election Read the Article

Snyder describes a “nightmare” scenario in which Republicans could steal the 2024 presidential election even if the Democratic nominee wins both the popular vote and the electoral vote.

Once again, John Katko uses deceitful and selective language to mislead his constituents and produce false data to justify his right-wing positions:

Katko has a constituent survey. It consists of one question, and the only choices provided line up with the completely inadequate Republican “Infrastructure proposal”. Here is the question and “suggested” answers:

As Congress considers comprehensive infrastructure reform legislation, what do you think should be prioritized?*

•                Repairing roads, highways, and bridges

•                Moving forward with the I-81 project

•                Strengthening water infrastructure & keeping drinking water clean

•                Expanding rural broadband

•                Improving costal residency & port infrastructure (Note: Presumably means “coastal”, not “costal”. If so, is this stuck in to protect wealthy oceanfront property owners?)

•                Supporting aviation industry & travelers

•                Other

Here are just some of the elements from Biden’s proposal that Katko chooses to ignore. You could use some of these in the OTHER box in the survey:

FROM: FACT SHEET: The American Jobs Plan Link to Fact Sheet

·       Build, preserve, and retrofit more than two million homes and commercial buildings, modernize our nation’s schools and child care facilities, and upgrade veterans’ hospitals and federal buildings.

·       Solidify the infrastructure of our care economy by creating jobs and raising wages and benefits for essential home care workers.

·       Revitalize manufacturing, secure U.S. supply chains, invest in R&D, and train Americans for the jobs of the future.

·       Create good-quality jobs that pay prevailing wages in safe and healthy workplaces while ensuring workers have a free and fair choice to organize, join a union, and bargain collectively with their employers.

·       Modernize public transit.

·       Invest in reliable passenger and freight rail service

·       Create good jobs electrifying vehicles.

·       Redress historic inequities and build the future of transportation infrastructure.

CALL KATKO and express your outrage at his constant dishonesty!  (315) 423-5657

EVENTS/ACTIONS CALENDAR

From our Allies at Center for Community Alternatives and Clean Slate NY:

We have just three more days to pass the Clean Slate Act this year. Last week, we rallied in five cities NY. (Press coverage in Pix11ABC 10CBS 6Spectrum RochesterWHAMWTENWIVBMid-Huson Valley News, and New York Now.) Now, we need to make sure we hit it home to end perpetual punishment!

Today & all this week, take THREE actions for Clean Slate:

CALL YOUR REPRESENATIVES: Use this Phone2Action tool to call, tweet and email your Assembly Member and Senator. It’s powerful and only takes a few minutes. (Don’t worry if you’ve already contacted them – they more they hear from us, the better!)

CALL LEADERSHIP: Call Senate Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie – and tell them to pass Clean Slate this week! Here are their numbers and a template phone script

FREE Anti-Racism Training Open to All Union Members ‘

WEDNESDAY AT 6 PM EDT

FREE Anti-Racism Training Open to All Union Members

Event by Greater Syracuse Labor Council and Central New York Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO

This training focuses on relationships that are expanding at an exponential rate, but our discourse is more divisive than any time in recent history.

This introductory workshop will go much deeper into the issues that currently cause conflict and division within the labor movement.

The objectives of this training will be to build solidarity by examining the dynamics of race, class and gender; to actively practice listening as a tool and a skill; to experience the impact of deep breathing on anxious situations; to reframe arguments and disagreements from “winner take all” to agreeing to honor the humanity that we share with our harshest critics.

This event is sponsored by the Greater Syracuse Labor Council and being provided at no cost to union members.

People’s Public Hearing on Lead Poisoning:

Environmental Justice for Syracuse Now!

Saturday, June 12, 2021, from 12pm – 2pm, in front of Syracuse City Hall. Event on Facebook.

https://www.facebook.com/events/365221148526933?ref=newsfeed

Water will be available. Possibly also seating – feel free to bring your own.

Why this hearing? Why now? Syracuse suffers unequally from childhood lead poisoning. Syracuse has 31% of the County’s population, but 88% of the entire County’s childhood lead poisoning. And in 2019, after years of testing Syracuse children for lead poisoning, our County Health Department ended blood-lead testing of children at WIC clinics, eliminating a key source of information about just how serious lead poisoning is in Syracuse. We want testing of that kind to return.

Sign and Share the Petition: End Childhood Lead Poisoning in  Syracuse, NY!

We demand our elected officials prioritize the following:

1.    TESTING NOW.

2.    OPERATE THE ORDINANCE (STOP THE HARM).

3.    RENTAL REGISTRY IN PLAIN VIEW. &

4.    SHARE THE DATA ON RACE AND PLACE.  (See link for additional).

Jewish Fast for Gaza

Event by Jewish Voice for Peace – Syracuse

We are joining in with the national Jewish Fast for Gaza. We’ll gather for an hour at the Federal Building to share fellowship and advocate for justice. We invite others to join us downtown or to fast on your own for the day. All are welcome – regardless of religious/ethnic identification and fasting is encouraged but not required.

The national effort is a religious initiative launched by a group of rabbis, Jews and people of faith/conscience with three goals:
• to call on Israel to immediately lift the blockade of Gaza;
• to call on the US government to cease all military aid to Israel until it complies with basic standards of human rights and international law;
• to call on Israel to negotiate a just peace that guarantees equality, justice and freedom for all who live between the river and sea.
